Magdaline Jemeli I started school in 1976 in Uasingishu at chepkoiyo primary. In STD 3, as my parents were not able to provide for us , so I used to look for vegetable (wild) e.g managu, derema so that i can sell to buy soap for washing my cloths and uniforms. During harvesting I used to go to collect remnants in the maize shambas from my neighbors for buying other necessities. My paternal aunt was able, so she used to tell my cousins to help us in providing for us in food, by planting for us every year. One of my cousins took me in and paid for my education from STD 5 up to form 4. After doing my KCE, I managed to get employment in the ministry of Transport as a clerical officer. I was offered a residential house by my employer and it has a spacious compound. My idea of growing and selling vegetables materialized. The business supplemented my salary income. I had a passion of giving out information to people hence I did a course in information science and right now I am Library Assistant in School of Aviation disseminating information to students to get informed and by helping them do Research.
In the estate I live, there are a bout 100 house holds who need vegetables during their daily meals hence started planting in my compound. There are varieties of them like kales , spinach ,amarandus, onions, pumpkins, night shade e.t.c. . I use the available space that is a round my residential house. My neighbors used to go outside the estate to purchase the vegetables for use. So I grew the vegetables for sale to the people and for my daily consumption. This has made my estate mates happy as they cost cut on the transport looking for the vegetables.Again ,the vegetables are healthy and fresh from the shamba.
money I get from my
business reinvest and
upkeep of my children as I supplement with my salary.
I will use the funds loaned to expand my vegetable business. This is by including other important varieties like potatoes ,garden peas, beans, sweet potatoes. The benefits will be added profit and the employment of other people who will improve their lives by getting wages.
