About Me

I am social, outgoing, fun loving and hardworking 21 year old guy. Raised and educated by a single mother with for other siblings. Born, raised and educated in Nakuru. Went to Mama Ngina Primary class one through eight and got selected to join a Provincial level School, Nakuru Day Secondary where I did my Form Four Finals. I later joined German Training Institute for Computer Studies and immediately after joined DALC Education for a certificate in Information Communication Technology. I have since joined Nairobi Aviation College for a Diploma in Software Engineering where I am currently. I juggle through class and work surprisingly comfortably.
I started my business an year after I cleared my high school education. I love working and being around computers and gadgets. I must say am a sucker for tech! I also love movies and music so much. I had been buying them ever since I could be trusted with money. One day we were talking with my friends in a matatu about how much we’ve all spent on credit cards since we started using cell phones and all our figures were just stupendous! Then we started calculating almost about everything and on realizing the figures we imagine how by now we could be able to drive ourselves if we saved up all that fare for those years et al. When I got home and went to peruse through my movie collection for something to watch, that is when it hit me, I can own my own movie shop if I wanted to. I could finally stop counting on my mum and let her concentrate on educating my younger brother and sister. I thought if I could have that little income coming in it make so much difference on my life. Help around with shopping and bills at home, buy myself a Smartphone! Some cool clothes and get to go out with my friends. Which I did until I got responsibilities too. To make my dream a reality I pitched this idea to my big bro and he said I do research about starting up and how much it would cost. Knowing as many people as I do who are involved in the movie business it was a piece of cake. I had all the info I needed within a week, i.e available and viable locations, rent prices, customer traffic and capital estimation.
It’s been two years now and I must say I barely have any regrets. Business is good and I have a very successful customer base. I finally moved out of my parent’s house and not into some hostel. I can afford my own rent and basic essentials. All I can remark is, Life is much more comfortable now.

My Business

I run a movies and music shop, Movie Space located at 2nd floor Shoppers Paradise Mall on Kenyatta Avenue Nakuru. Basically I deal with sell of international movies and music as local ones have a copywrite law that protects against unauthorized sale. People of all generations listen to music and watch movies, sure their taste varies but that’s the beauty of being in this business, you stock a variety of genres. Demand for movies and music is ever on the rise, name whatever mood or situation anyone might be in and I will give you a movie title and a song title that will suit that person. Some people watch movies to relax, after a long day at work, you need something to get your head off the unbalanced cheque, on your way to work, stuck in traffic, you need some music to help your clear your head, You have the family together and there ir bad weather you can’t go out, you need a nice family movie to keep you warm in the house. However you look at it everyone in the world at one point of day needs some music or a movie to watch. And That is why The Movie Space Shop is a must stop!
I have managed to keep and pull in more customers by being very close to them, learning a pattern in their interest, knowing this one will prefer an action packed series during the weekend to a comedy movie which he takes on a weekday. Customer relations is also key, most of my customers work long hours sitting in the office and the last thing they need is to come to a movie shop and stand or sit for twenty more minutes waiting for a movie, thus they prefer calling before they step out of work, place an order, come pay and pick, a minutes tops! The greatest challenge I have right now is keeping customers waiting. I have one computer with two writers and a duplicator. I am looking for a loan because I want to buy another computer with four more writers which will make my work easier and faster as at one moment I will be burning around seven movies at a go. That can be seven different customers at one time or two or three depending on the number of purchase of one customer. On a good day I can pocket Ksh3000 by closing time and on a very bad day about Ksh1000 after deduction of cost. My typical Per day cost of service is around Ksh1000 to buy blank discs and disc covers. My shop is very strategically placed thus I get a lot of traffic, new customers bump in on their way to another shop because it is right in their way. I have little to no complaints from my customers as I give recommendable services. Some of the other challenges I face is the ever increasing licenses and charges. But all in all I manage. The money to repay my loan will come from my business which I am sure will not disappoint.

Loan Proposal

I will use the loan to add to the little amount I have to buy another computer to my shop, that will boost my sales as it will speed up the burning process because I will be making more movies at a go. I have two writers as at now, if I add two more then I will manage to burn four movies at an instance which is two times more the productivity. customers don't like to be kept waiting for long. So if I speed up the time they have to wait for their movies I will be building the moral of the customer who will want to come time and again because they don't have to waste their precious time at my shop. This is also good because if they tell a friend about that, their friends would also want to have the same experience.
