About Me

My names are Miriam Mwihaki Mwangi and I was born forty one years ago. I am born again and Jesus is my Lord Savior. I reside in Kenya at an estate known as Free-Area in Nakuru County.
I was directed to you by my sister Alice Wakonyo Mwangi from Rongai in Kenya who is a member of your organization.
I am a married woman and a mother of two children. My husband is a poultry and rabbit farmer while I own a small institution i.e a nursery school.

My Business

My school started in the year 2001 from another person’s management but I was handed over in the year 2008.
When the institution was handed over to me, it was just a nursery school with only forty five children but now I have introduced standard 1 and 2 making over sixty children.
Previously, I have been a member of a micro-finace institution known as Kenya Women Finance Trust. But after I learnt about your loan interest and other better services you offer, I found you to be much more convenient to me.
We need money in order to meet our financial needs especially paying the teachers’ salary, feeding the children & renovating the building. The second page below shows a picture of our school, the children and the teachers. In the picture, am standing on the right side wearing a brown suit.

Loan Proposal

I will use the money in funding my school by bringing in more learning materials for the children which should enable them to be sharp witted and admirable people in the society. I will also improve my tea leaves business that i started, in this business i supply tea leaves to supermarkets and other retail shops.

Dear Zidisha , Kindly accept my new grace period as am having financial difficulties to repay my loan.the main reason is that am having a student ( my son ) sitting his final exam this year. I was asked by the school to pay the whole amount for him to be allowed to sit for his final exams.

Kindly allow me to have this grace period.

    regards
    Member Miriam.

Hello, my name is Dan Cembrola, one of Zidisha’s Kenya Client Relationship Managers. I am currently visiting Zidisha borrowers in Nakuru and its outskirts.

Today I visited Miriam at her school in a neighborhood of Nakuru called Free Area. Free Area is a neighborhood that has grown extensively since the post-election violence of 2007-2008. Thousands of people have relocated to this area after they were forced to leave their homes in the Northern and Western provinces that were greatly effected by the post-election violence.

Though Miriam's school, Joyful Sounds Academy, has been in existence for fifteen years, Miriam has served as principal and chief administrator for the last five years. She assumed control of the school, after her predecessor was forced to take a leave of absence after the post-election violence. Miriam was not trained as a teacher and does not actually teach any classes at Joyful Sounds Academy, but she oversees the day to day operations of the school, its three teachers, and sixty students.
Teaching runs in Miriam's family. Her father is the owner of the land Joyful Sounds Academy occupies and was involved in starting the school fifteen years ago. Miriam's brother owns and manages Bahati Hills Academy, a private secondary school thirty minutes north of Joyful Sounds Academy. Currently, Joyful Sounds Academy has a nursery school and primary school. Upon completion of primary school, students are able to attend Miriam's brother's secondary school.

With her first loan, Miriam made improvements to the school such as repainting, buying new desks, and school supplies. Since the new constitution was ratified by the Kenyan parliament in 2010, all public primary schools are free for children to attend and are sponsored by the government. Private schools, such as Miriam's Joyful Sounds Academy, are considered to offer a higher quality of education however. The improvements that Miriam made with her loan from Zidisha makes the school look more attractive to the community, especially in comparison to the underfunded government schools. For this reason, Miriam is able to charge a higher cost per term for each student.

As Miriam's neighborhood continues to grow, she plans on expanding her school. She also wants to add a playground to the school's property. She beleives that this will attract children in the area to her school. Joyful Sounds Academy has a bright future under Miriam's stewardship. Her connection with Bahati Hills Academy allows the students of Joyful Sounds Academy to have a clear path to complete a private school education through secondary school, making them competitive candidates for entrance to the country's top universities.
