I am a born again Christian 53 years old and a mother of three boys, aged 28, 24 and 13 ½ years. I went to school up to form IV and trained for other skills. I am a trained secretary, an office manager (Administration) and also a roads maintenance contractor. I worked with the Ministry of Roads and Public Works until year 2000 when the government laid off a big number of its workers in a restructuring of the Civil Service project. Then my husband left me in 2002. I was set back without any usable business knowledge since I decided not to seek re-employment but to start my own business. I did not have enough business skills and that did not deter me from entering into business. By and by I have managed to put my children singlehandedly through secondary school and the last one is in a boarding school today.
I have been a supplier of general merchandise, mostly in various government departments although the competition is quite high and the jobs far apart. Last year my church, Christ Formation Chapel in Kilifi, sent me to open and pastor the Hindi branch. Since I came to Hindi I have seen great and dire need of vulnerable children and decided to open a Rescue Centre to cater majorly for the girls below 18 and orphans and vulnerable children. They are mostly neglected, abused; this is the most vulnerable group in this society. I have a desire to empower the girl child with life sustaining skills to enable them to have a fighting chance in their lives. Most never go past Class 8. I registered an organization named MaEzra Foundation for the purpose of working with these girls to help them make it in life through education and empowerment of marketable skills.
I will use these funds to start the first business to assist the young girls of Hindi to train them in sewing and the money they make will repay the loan and allow us to move to the next stages so we can create additional business trainings for them. The area is growing with the new port but people must have the trainings and skills to meet the new opportunities this development brings. Before the loan amount was changed we thought to start first with a bakery, but we can get this first paid back and move up to the larger loans to realize this dream
