Hi Amy: My name is Hugh and I am one of the Zidisha members who helped to fund your loan. I hope that you have been able to overcome your difficulties. Can you please give an indication of when you expect to complete the repayment of your loan?

The other day I had the pleasure to meet one of Zidisha’s newest borrowers, Amy Koné. Amy lives in Parcelles Assainies neighborhood, about an hour outside of downtown Dakar, with her mother and siblings. Her father is a retired military man who now lives in a house in Thies a smaller town east of Dakar. In Thies her father grows mangos, watermelons and various vegetables, not a bad way to spend your retirement.
Amy is a well-educated young woman who has finished her studies in finance, but due to the lack of job opportunities in Dakar she has most recently dove into the informal business of merchandise import/export, and for Amy business is going very well. With the loan that Amy was able to fundraise with your help through Zidisha she has recently taken her first trip to the Gambia to buy products to resell to her clients in Dakar. If there is one thing Amy is an expert at it is the concept of networking. She has various business partners and a solid clientele base that she supplies to the best of her ability when they request certain products. On her trip to the Gambia Amy was able to buy women’s clothing and shoes, as well as men’s shirts. In Dakar Amy is able to resell her products for an average profit of 5,000CFA (~10 USD). Amy’s products do not however only come from the Gambia, one of her business partners and childhood friends, Fanta works at the airport in Dakar and is able to save money on trips to Morocco, Dubai, and Turkey where she buys products for Amy to resell in Dakar. Their partnership is strong and Amy tells me of the benefits that come with working with her friend, their trust in one another is strong because they’ve been friends since childhood.
Amy is ambitious and forward thinking, and she tells me she hopes to repay this current loan even earlier than expected. In the future she hopes to raise even bigger loans that will afford her the opportunity to travel to markets in Morocco, Turkey and Dubai herself so that she can continue to learn more and more about the import/export business. Amy is cognizant of the fact that one must work in order to be self-sufficient and though she is always searching and applying for more stable jobs in the field of her studies, she has been quite successful in her current affairs because of her ingenuity and networking skills.
