About Me

My name is Awa Lèye. I live in Thiaroye sur Mer and I work in the “Parcelles Assainies” neighborhood Unit #9. I live there with my husband and my in-laws, my mother and my sisters live in Unit #9 as well. I grew up in this neighborhood currently selling second hand clothing, selling fruits in school cafeterias allowing me to put aside about 2,000 FCFA which has allowed me to change (location) and now sell my second hand clothing in my neighborhood. My intention is to move to the market place. For us women, the work is huge. We have to wake up every morning at 5AM while we have small children who need to go t school and I am the one paying for their education. Their father works as a day laborer in Dakar’s harbor and what he makes helps us pay the bills and everyday expenses. My mother who was a very energetic woman has taught us how to work and not rely on anybody which has enabled us to solve our problems.

My Business

This business helps me survive but I have to wake up every day at 6AM, go to the big weekly markets to buy second hand clothing and re-sell them. I have a cousin who goes to France and Italy, she brings back clothes, gives them to me and I re-sell them bulk or retail. This is much more profitable than selling fruits. I like this line of work: there are opportunities for exchanges at the weekly market. I exchange a lot with sellers who live in Burkina : they give me merchandise and I give them some back in exchange. Trading is very complex in our country and I think I am doing well. I am asking for a loan from Zidisha because this business always calls for liquid assets in order to replenish my inventory on time and also because there are always novelties -which is what my customers ask for- and you always have to renew yourself for your customers. But nevertheless, this business is profitable.

About Me

My Business

Hi Hope2012, what you think about making a team with the purpose of bringing rates down? :-). (3% max to overcome paypal fees)

      Hi gastao, bom dia
That sounds likes good idea to me, if you want to set up a team I'll join. :)
There has been some discussion about interest rates on the forum - some lenders feel we should not bid low as it might discourage other investors. But in all good conscience I do not want to make a profit out of lending money (usura /riba)
The paypal transaction fees to get money into the system are 3 percent (it's free to take money out, I thought it was another 3%)
After some reflection I decided to pay these myself. I just feel happier knowing that borrowers realise this is a group sharing system, and 0% is right for me. It means I lose a little money each time but I'm ok with that. I don't expect others to.
That's why I only bid on loans that are just in the closing stages so as not to cancel out those lenders who have already bid at a higher rate. They disagree with me and want to cover their costs or make a small profit. I don't want to tell them what to do, waste their time, or hold up their bids.
Lately I've noticed the interest rates creeping up as new investors arrive and I think 10 percent is too much. so it's a balance between keeping the original aim - lowest possible cost finance - and encouraging more investors.
In short, a lending group based on keeping it low as possible and encouraging each other sounds like a good idea ;)

I'm also trying to prioritise those who are having to pay the "New borrower Registration fee" as that is one more burden. That's why I lent more to Awa Lèye instead of splitting the funds between other borrowers. The first loan is often the hardest to pay back.
Good luck and many blessings Awa! Bonne chance ;)
