I love farming, especially the part that focuses on livestock rearing. The first-time I visited my fathers farm, I admired the nature of well bred and healthy looking livestock I saw. I was so curious and enquired what inspired him to combine crop farming and animal rearing together.
He told me as a farmer there were times he was unable to reap as much as he desired from his crop yield, obviously due to poor weather conditions among others but had to still make provisions for his family's upkeep. In such times, he relies on the livestock to meet his budget by selling some of them for money or slaughtering some for family food. I fell in love with livestock rearing and informed him about my decision to own a structure. He was excited and help build a new structure, and also gave me about four animals to start with.
As at now, I own twenty five livestock made up of 15 goats and 10 sheeps. I have sold some on many occasions to support my parents pay for my school fees, and I really want to embark on large scale livestock farming given the needed funds.
The main source of income from livestock farming comes from the sale of the animals to commercial butchers, who provide a ready source of market.
The main cost incurred frequently are the cost of feed such as rice, maize, millet and other commercial feeds obtain from the market. Sometimes I feed the animals on natural grass and other herbs which are also nutritious and can be obtained from the nearby surroundings. Profits obtained from the farm are used:
1. To purchase feed from the market
2. Buy additional animals
3. Pay for periodic vaccination
4. Or used for
other expenses.
The first loan would be disrbused as below:
1. Feed ($40)
2. Seven additional livestock ($54)
3. Veterinary services ($11)
All these costs may vary depending on my negotiating strength with the suppliers. But since I have already built a good relationship with some few suppliers, I may befall on them when the loan is received from zidisha.org.
