About Me

I am Peter Mwaura. I was born in Nakuru county but later re-located to Mombasa where I run a small scale business. I am married to one wife with two children - a girl aged 9 years and a boy aged 5 years and they are both in school. My wife is not in formal employement and I am the sole bread winner of the family.
I live in a rented house and I do business in Mombasa town which is about 8 kilometers away where I use public transport to get there. I am a hardworking person and I believe I can take my business to even greater height if given the much needed credit from Zidisha.

I promise to use the money wisely and for the purpose of expanding my business only.

My Business

My business entails selling small quantities of hardware materials namely, plumbing materials, chains, nails etc. I normally source my supplies from wholesalers but I also deal with second hand materials. My monthly income after all the expenses is an average of $200.00. My desire is to increase my stock to include electrical materials so as to boost my income. The demand for this materials is very high in Mombasa due to the rapid expansion of the city. My main handicap is finances to expand my small business.

I therefore appeal to lenders to assist me raise this amount so as to realize my dream.

Loan Proposal

This is my second loan application at Zidisha having successfully repaid the first one. This time, I want to expand my horizons and invest in farming equipment. Our Kenyan government is currently encouraging young people to move from urban areas and go to the countryside and do farming so as to curb the rural-urban migration.

I want to take this advantage and stock the following farming equipment

1. Assorted hoes - 20 pcs at a total cost of $180
2. Fork Jembes - 10 pcs at a total cost of $100
3. Slashers - 15 pcs at a total cost of $80
4. Spray pumps 4 pcs at a total cost of $100

I have done proper feasibility study and I am sure this will be a success just like the first project.

Thank you.

I spoke to Peter today and he said that he is still committed to repaying this loan in full. His business collapsed and that is why he has not been able to service this loan. He is hoping for better days ahead.

Dear lenders, Business has been tough the last couple of months. I have recovered a little bit but I can only afford to pay KES 300 per week as for now until my business goes back on track. Thank you.

Dear lenders, I am very sorry for the late payments. I have been experiencing hard times at my business and this caused the long delay. My business is now recovering and I am now able to repay KES 500 per week. Thank you and I kindly ask for your understanding.

My name is Kerry Tiedeman and I am a Client Relationship Intern for Zidisha in Kenya. Normally I am staying in Nairobi, visiting with borrowers, but this week I went to the coastal city of Mombasa and that is where I met Peter, the owner of a hardware store in the town center.

I met Peter by way of his wife, who is also a member of Zidisha. I first visited her salon which is farther north of the city. During our visit, she told me that her husband was also a member and would like to meet me as well. Getting know families is always fun, especially when they are also borrowers, so after our meeting I hopped in a Matatu and headed town, where I met Peter at the central post office. Then we took a Tuk Tuk to his hardware store.

The hardware store, he shares with another entreprenuer who sells shoes. He has had the store for around four years. Before he was selling second hand clothes. Taxes became too high to sell second hand clothes, so Peter began this business venture. He took from his experience working for a man who had a hardware store years before. There he learned about the different types of supplies he would need as well as some plumbing skills. His best selling items currently at his store are plumbing elbows and piping. He says that plumbers will be hired by a landowner by a place where they all sit on the street in downtown. Then they will pass by his shop and pick up the necessary materials.

WIthout Zidisha, Peter says there is no way he would have this store. He has used the loans for supplies and hopes with the next loan he will be able to own a store that he won't have to share in the same area of the city. Peter uses the profits from his business to help out his mother and his family. His father passed away years ago and his mother who lives in Nakuru still depends on him for support.

When I was with Peter, Alice called several times to make sure I made it to his store alright and to invite me back to their home. I wasn't able to, but when Alice called it showed up as "1st Lady" in Peter's phone. I laughed and so did he, though it shows what a family man Peter is, and where is priorties are. In the rare free time he has, he likes to take his wife and daughter, Mary to Fort Jesus (a medieval fortress in town) and the beach. He hopes someday he will return to the countryside where he is from and purchase land.

It was a pleasure to meet Peter and like the incredible guy he is, he called me to make sure I made it back safely to my hostel. Check out the photos from our visit!

Dear lenders, the dreaded countdown to expiry is on. I have to keep checking after every few hours to see some positive movements. Please do not let this loan expire because I have come from so far. I know I can count on you once more.

I am about to clear my loan which I took in April this year. As I stated in my application, I used the money to buy paint which was in high demand at that time. This venture proved to be very successful and I have managed to repay the loan without struggling. What I liked most about this loan is the short time it took for the funds to be raised and the friendly interest rate.

I had always been apprehensive about taking loans due to the huge interest demanded by the lender and very short repayment period. Zidisha has made me change my attitude about loans. If I were to borrow this money from the local lenders, they would have demanded that I pay it back within a month and at a very high interest.

I am hoping to clear this amount soon and apply for another loan to expand my business even further. Once more, thank you lenders and Zidisha fraternity for your support.
