My name is Frank Kirkmore a native of the Akim oda community in the Eastern part of Ghana where poverty is high among food crop farmers. I hail from a family of 7 of which I am the 6th born of my family. My father a retire Agriculturist who took into growing of more food crops for both subsistence and commercial purposes. This poor man {father} took care of all the seven family members both financially, educationally , clothed us and also shelter for us when we all where young until he obtain 85 years. I became a school drop out after those years of old age since he could no longer afford to cater for the last 2 of us before he obtain 59 years. He is currently weak , old and also lacks the financial muscle to put us into good schools to have the best of education.
Due to all this hardship I had nothing more to do than to drop out from school to carry out the farming activity he left each and every one of us with. So I took to active farming planting vegetables such as Onions tomatoes, garden eggs , green pepper and okro.
In line with my business, I plant and harvest this crop which has a high demand and the business is lucrative because many people like vegetables for good and healthy living.
The business has a high yield and also requires more attention and hard work in order to meet the impending demand. However, despite the good profits that one gets, there are certain post harvest loses that sometimes weighs me down.
Also the climate change is also a factor and that alone is also pulling me down. More so, the cost of transportation recently on the tomatoes I harvested made me lost about GHS1230.00 and all this factors has drained me down. My turnover alone on that harvest was GHS7200.00 which in other words is approximately 1800 usd. I was supposed to have made GHS 9200 .00 in all of that harvest.
I have have suffered all this while trying to fix this loses but nothing better seems to have come out of this. Today I have the opportunity to join this forum and wish to shared my sincere problems to the good and wonderful lenders and people here to help breath in hope into my vegetable business. it is my hope that i want to stay forever with my farming project, because it is my source of livelihood.
I will use part of this loan to pay off the transport cost in transporting my crop to the city for a ready market. Since I have an impending harvest to make on my next harvest which will come off by the 14th of October 2016 on my tomatoes farm. While organizing this I will also look for an alternative to get a place to house the harvest against theft and animals from eating it. I strongly believe all this will help in transforming and shaping my business well for the future. Thank you all in advance for the support. God keep us safe from harm.
