About Me

my name is Ruth Kurgat. i was born in nyanza, kisumu town. i grew up by the lake side where fishing and fish farming was the main economic and activity practised. i enjoyed the view and practice of fishing and i sometimes used to go fishing with my father and uncles. this was not allowed for a girl child as it was strictly for men in the community. i grew up liking and gaining desire to deal with fish. i loved the waters too and i was not afraid to go fishing in the middle of the lake. my parents were very poor so i did not finish my primary education. and also during my time when i was a child, girl child education was not given any importance and therefore i dropped out of school in my standard seven. luckily i had acquired communication skills and i knew how to read and write. it was hard for me to stay at home seeing other children and all my brothers go to school, i was hurt. i was later married off to a man from Nakuru town and i moved to Nakuru to live with my husband. i now have three children, two girls and one boy. they are all very bright and i want all of them to get proper education without being discriminated upon based on their sex as it was for me.

My Business

my husband died three years ago and so all the responsibility of paying school fees, taking care of the children and providing for all their needs were left to me. i had to look for a job to do in order to support my family and the first thing that i had in mind was my passion for fishing and selling fish. i saw a great business opportunity in selling fish in Nakuru town because very few people sold fish in this area. i knew it would be easy for me to win customers with my fish business because i know how to handle fish well and to deal with the storage of fish, which is a delicate part and it is the reason many people do not the risk to start fish selling. i removed my husbands savings and started a small shade put up at the side of the road with some sticks and iron sheets. i started by ordering 100 pieces of fish from a relative in kisumu town, each at 1 us dollar which i sold all of them at the end of the day each at 3 us dollars. this gave me three times the buying price. i was motivated and the next day i ordered double the pieces of fish, by the third week, i used to buy 400 pieces of fish until now. from my business, i save around 50 us dollars in a day. fish is in demand to the people because it is a source of food, rich in protein. it helps to maintain the health of humans.

Loan Proposal

i save a lot of money at the end of the day. this is in thanks of my hard work. i have a total of 590 us dollars. to be able to open a restaurant, i need about 190 us dollars more. i need to buy at least 10 seats worth 9 dollars each and ten tables worth 18 us dollars each. i will also need to buy kitchen utensils and source of fire, a cooker. all these will take 500 us dollars together with employing at least two cooks who will be assisting me to prepare the food. i will use another 10 us dollars to buy vegetables used to serve with the fish as accompaniments in the meal. another 10 us dollars will buy flour and rice to serve together with the stew. with this improvement i expect my profit to increase three times because now it is a bigger scale. i will be able to repay my loan and take a greater loan to expand and keep improving my business.
