Am john Njabia karanja from kikuyu Kenya. My love of food and farming started in my first year when my mother and father would bring me into the garden, set me among the tomatoes and flowers and go off to do their work. My passion for food and the outdoors continued growing throughout my childhood and adolescence.
While at the Kenyatta university I studied Sustainable Development with a focus on agriculture. I was most interested in examining the effects of healthy food systems on communities in developing nations. I was privileged to travel and meet with farmers to discuss agricultural issues such as Fair Trade policy and organic practices.
In 20I2 I settled on farming full-time. By the Fall of 2013, my desire to start my own farm on my family's land was too strong to ignore.I started growing vegetables, Feeding my community with food they can trust has brought great joy into my life and I hope to continue on this path for many years.

I Started a small bio-intensive organic vegetable farm. On under an acre, I grow over 80 varieties of vegetables, often seeking out heirloom and lesser known varieties.
Initially,my business was so challenging but over the last 2years it has transitioned into a more market focused business, selling the majority of the produce through two local farmers markets. This model gives me a direct connection to the consumer with immediate feedback. That feedback is considered when making all decisions on the farm throughout the season.
My biggest challenge is my limited land combined with undesirable weather. My goals for the future are to invest in greenhouses which will provide a more consistent revenue flow for the farm. Greenhouses will maximize my limited acreage by providing predictable growing conditions.
This zidisha loan would go towards the purchase of a mobile greenhouse and the equipment needed to operate it properly. This greenhouse would provide the ability for me to extend my growing season, as well as get a head start at the markets in the Spring. Protecting profitable crops such as greens, tomatoes and cucumbers from undesirable weather will provide the farm with consistent, predictable revenue.
By purchasing a mobile greenhouse, I will be able to cover up to four plots in one season allowing for crop rotation and prevention of the pest build-up commonly found in stationary greenhouses. Given the small size of my land, the greenhouse will have a significant impact on productivity and profitability.
