About Me

My name is Modester Muragwa Indeche from Nairobi- Kenya. I am 40 years old. I am married with 4 kids together. My first born is boy 13 years old, second born is a boy 11 years old, third born is a girl 10 years old and lastly my last born is a boy 9 years old. Their names are Collins Anunda, Jakes Finney Anunda, Jewel Bakhoya and Israel Hicks respectively.

I am the 4th born in a family of 9 kids thus 6 girls and 3 boys. I started going to school at a tender age thus at the age of 2 years. My parents told me that I used to cry whenever I see my other siblings going to school and thus, this made me start my education earlier. Usually during those days for a child to start going to school, the interview was: the right hand was to be passed across your head then touch the ear on your left hand side which my hand could not touch the ear. My parents had to plead with the administration to allow me start my Pre- school education. I used to perform well right from Pr-school, Primary and high school. I was appointed class monitor from nursery to class 4. From class 4-8, I was the school headgirl and Christian Union leader. I was the second best performer in the KCPE exams however, my parents were not able to pay for me high school fees since I had 2 of my siblings who were ahead of me in high school too.

My parents approached many friends to help me financially go to school however, their friends did not have finances too. Finally, I visited my aunt who had visited her rural home in Webuye and requested her if she could support me by paying my high school fees. Eventually she admitted and this made me to continue with my high school education till college. She really helped me achieve my goal of education.

I came to start this business of Maize and beans farming in Kitale after God giving my husband and me the vision and mission of serving the orphans, kids with special needs ( autism) needy kids, total orphans and those who have single parents. There a lot of kids who really have the passion of going to school but due to financial challenges that their parents, guardians’ are facing they are not able to make their dreams come true. I imagined how my aunt supported me financially till I finished my high school education, We are taking care of these kids at a centre called Valley of Truth Learning Centre. The kids that we care age aged between 2-13 years. The centre is now 6 years old. The centre is located in Tassia area near the slum of Tassia. We provide the following services to these kids at the centre: Feeding Programme, General Basic Education, clothing, teaching them spiritual moral values and medical services. The centre has a total number of 170 kids. We thank God for the small support from the community towards these vision. Our vision and mission is to bring a difference in the lives of these needs kids in future and also transform the community of Tassia.

My Business

I started this business so that we can get some income to help Valley of Truth Learning Centre (VOT) sort some of the bills since there are a lot challenges in taking care of these kids like: paying rent for the center where we are hosting these kids, paying the teachers and staff workers and also meeting to their medical care services.

I thought of something that could help generate funds for the school and also help in Feeding Programme . I resolved the best option is farming: ( Maize and beans farming ) on a large scale. The only place where this kind of farming can be done is in Rift Valley Province ( Kitale Scheme) since this is where we have large pieces of land. Maize farming will enable Valley of Truth Learning Centre get food for the school, sell the surplus to offset some of the centre’s needs and and create job opportunities to the community around Kitale. The following is my beak-down for the estimated budget for leasing land, ploughing, harrowing, buying seeds and fertilizers, wedding and harvesting.

ITEM COST PER HA COST @20 HA KES $
Land 7,000/= 70,000/= 140,000/= $1560
Ploughing 4,000/= 80,000= 80,000/ = $890
Harrowing 3,000/= 60,000/= 60,000/= $670
Seeds 10kg = 150/= 3000/= 3000/= $33
Fertilizers Beans = 180/= 3600/= 3600/= $40
Weeding 20,000 40,,000/= 40,000/= $444
Harvesting 3,000/= 60,000= 60,000/= $670
TOTAL KES. 386,600 $4,307

Loan Proposal

When I am funded the loan, I will travel to Kitale and lease land that will be equivalent to the loan.

I will start preparing the land ready for planting next year since the land is usually prepared during November and December. Land preparations involves: slashing, ploughing. After sometimes when the soil is fully mixed well in the month of January, I will be visit the area again to start doing harrowing.

In the month of February, I will planting my first seeds. I believe this loan will enable me leasehalf an acre of land, and do land preparation, buy fertilizer and seed in small quantities . I will try and budget it well for a half an acre leasing, preparing, wedding and harvesting.
