My name is Fatuma Saha, a mother of three children aged 15, 13 and 5 years old. I was born near Mombasa in a polygamous family. My father had 5 wives and 21 children. He was a poor man and this meant that I spent my childhood years deprived of many basic necessities.
However, I managed to go to school up to secondary school, but I dropped out due to lack of school fees. I befriended my former classmates and I would borrow their books and study at home with the hope that somehow my parents would get money to take me back to school. Unfortunately this was not to be and, due to frustrations, I fell for a man who became my husband at an early age of 19.
We got married, but the man, who was much older than me and a divorcee, became very abusive and I left his home after cohabiting for three years. With no one to turn to, I used the little money I had to start a roadside eatery where I started by making simple meals to serve the low income people in the community.
I am still doing this and I am happy that this business is providing for me and my three children, whom I would like to have a bright future and be loved unlike what I went through.
I run a small eatery by the road where people come for their meals. I serve people who work in construction sites, handcart pushers, and other low-income people. I prepare the meals at home and then transport it for a short distance to my premises where I serve the people.
I normally serve about 50 people in a day and the average spending per person is slightly less than a dollar. The profit I make from this daily activity is about $40. I am happy that, with time, I have won trust of many people around and I believe the business can do much better if given credit to improve on a few areas.
With my second loan, I will use it to buy more chairs to accommodate more customers in my eatery. I am having a shortage of sitting space and some of my customers have to eat while standing and this is making me lose out to competition.
I plan to buy 7 plastic chairs at a total cost of $65. I will use the balance to do some minor repair work in my premises. Thank you.
