    Hello Lenders,

My name is Andrew Weber and I recently served as a Zidisha Client Relationship Manger in Kenya. There I paid a visit to Nelly at her business in a village outside the city of Kilifi on the coast. Nelly has been operating an MPESA kiosk since 2009 there. She started as just an MPESA agent buy now sells water bottles out of her store also. MPESA is mobile phone payment system where people deposit money on a kiosk to add money to their cell phone account. This enables them to send the money to anyone else’s mobile phone. It has revolutionized life in Kenya over the last few years, allowing people from small villages to earn wages in the cities and easily send the money back to their rural towns. The system was pioneered in Kenya and is rapidly spreading across the developing world.

With such rabid demand for MPESA services, Nelly never has slow days at her kiosk. With her loan, she intends to turn her MPESA kiosk into more of a shop where customers will be tempted to buy a soft drink or snack while they wait for their MPESA transaction to be completed. She uses the profits to support her 2 young children.
