About Me

My name is Sarah. I am a business woman. I completed my secondary school studies in 2005.it was not possible to continue in the academic line due to financial constrains and hence I started working as an apprentice hairdresser in a friends solon. I took a liking of the trade and saved some money with which I enrolled in college for formal training in hairdressing. On completing the training, I started my own beauty salon (VERTA BEATY SALON). Recently I have opened an M pesa shop in the same premise. I have a dream of expanding the business to include training young school leavers

My Business

My business includes a beauty salon and an M pesa shop both housed in the same premise located at shiners estate along Nakuru- Nairobi highway. In the salon I provide beauty services ie hair styling, conditioning, braiding and hair cuts .My target clients are mainly students since there are many schools in the neighborhood. I also offer the services to the local community members. From the salon I make an average of KES 1,000 per day .From the M pesa I make about KES 8,000 per month. From the total income I pay rent as well commission nto my two assistants.
If I secure the credit from ZIDISHA , I intend to buy two blow dry machines to be used to start a training section where I will start training at least four students on hairdressing .with the extra income I believe I will be able to pay back the credit as well as improve my financial position.

Loan Proposal

My business includes a beauty solon and an m-pesa shop housed in the same premises but in different sections. I work fulltime in the hair salon and my assistant handles the m-pesa section.
When I secure the credit from ZIDISHA, I intend to expand the hair salon section to include a training section where I will train school leavers on hair dressing skills. My target clients are the many school leavers in the neighborhood who are unable to proceed with formal education due to various reasons.
To achieve this, I will buy
• One dummy head for plaiting @ KES 2,000
• One blow-dry machine @ KES 4,000
• Four plastic chairs @KES 2,000

With these basics, I will set up a training class for four students. Each student will pay KES 4,500 per month translating to KES 18,000 P.M. part of this new income (KES 10,000) will go towards running expenditures eg buying combs, perfumes, conditioners e.t.c and commission for a new assistant .Thus ,from this new adventure I will be able to increase my net income by about KES KES 8,000 per month.
From these, I will repay the loan in the agreed schedule.
Looking forward to favorable outcome from all ZIDISHA lenders

kindly allow me to lower my repayment installments as indicated. i was a victim of burglary in the month of march and i lost a lot of stock as well as blow dry machines. this has affected my business seriously. my returns have dropped since i didn't have money to restock. once the situation improves i will pay more. thank you

    Dear Zidisha staff
I hereby request to be allowed to reschedule my loan repayment as above. the main reason is that the local government has raised licensing fee which must be paid this month. The cost of operating business has significantly gone up this year compared to last year. This includes the cost of my rental premisev as well as electricity cost. I will revise the rates upwards once the current urgent issues are over.

      Dear Tom

I am glad for the information.I have not been online for some time since my computer had crushed.I am ok and doing my best. The business is doing well though there are delays in fees payments. This i hope to overcome with time. Five students have completed the course and three are in progress. When i get more funding i hope to formerly register as a training centre.
Thank you again for your continued support.
      Best regards

        Dear Sarah,

Thank you very much for the update from your side!

What do you do with the students if they have not paid the fees? Aren't they supposed to pay for the fees upfront?

        Kind regards,

        Tom

          Dear Tom
Ideally , they are supposed to pay at least half before they start. The balance should be cleared by the end of the course. However ,this being a low income area ,some are unable to fully pay up.all the same i am doing above average and hope to improve as i take root in the business .

          Thank you and regards

Thanks for your concern. It is going better than i thought. I already have the three trainees. i am personally handling them for three hours every weekday between 8. 00 am to 11. 00 am. i am planning to hire a trainer at a commission and introduce another session in the afternoons.

Hello Sarah, I am happy to read it is going even better than anticipated and you already have 3 trainees. It's a good idea to further expand your training business in the afternoons. Make sure your hired trainer can offer the same quality as yourself.

And don't forget to offer your trainees a nice certificate after they have gone through your training. Your trainees may become your best ambassadors in the future.

In future, you may have a whole network of people who were trained by you. An additional way of generating income would be to sell salon products to your trainees for their own businesses. You can buy in bulk and then re-sell in smaller quantities. In that way, your trainees continue generating revenue for you.

              Cheers, Tom

Thank you for the update. I am sorry to hear what happened at Westgate in Nairobi. I hope none of your relatives or friends have been affected.

How is your business going? Are the students enthusiastic?

I have not visited the site for some time .there have been a lot of excitement in the local news sites due to the attack and the ICC cases.

My business is ok ,though i now face the challenge of space in the premise. with time i think i will consider moving to a lager premise or separate the businesses.

I now have four trainees and my assistant is doing a fine job with them

                    Thanks and regards

                      Dear Sarah,

Thank you very much for the update. It is good to know your business is indeed expanding. And you now have your four trainees as planned. Are they also paying the fees as originally planned?

It is also good to think ahead about the larger premises. I believe you will be able to apply for a second, bigger loan, once you have successfully repaid the current one.

                      Kind regards,

                      Tom
