About Me

My name is Jo-Ann Attah Akpene. I hail from the Volta Region of Ghana. I am from a family of four: my mother, my younger sister, my elder brother and myself. My father passed away about ten years ago. My sister and I live with my mother at Tema, whereas my brother lives in Accra.

I am passionate about helping people and I desire to do so financially when I have the means. I love engineering, music and arts, especially bead work.

I am a third year student of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, reading BSc Chemical Engineering. After completing my first degree in chemical engineering, I desire to further pursue a master’s degree and PhD in my field of study. Funding my education has been a burden on my mother and my brother for several years now since my father passed. To reduce the stress on my mother and my brother, I started a business.

My Business

As a university student reading BSc Chemical Engineering, whose needs are fast-growing as the years go by, I thought of starting a business which could give me some financial support. Buying books and other lecture materials, eating, transportation to school and back home could be catered for by my earnings from this business. Seeing bead work is a skill I possess, I decided to use it to get some money to support myself. I make bead jewelry: earrings, bracelets, necklaces. I also make bead bags.

For about one and a half years now, I have made and sold several copies of these products at school and at home. People buy them for programs like parties and weddings, among others. With the help of social media, I am pulling a crowd of customers who are getting really interested and excited about my products. Hence I need to produce more to satisfy them and in turn earn some more to support myself.

Loan Proposal

I am a student of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology offering BSc Chemical Engineering. I completed my second year about a month ago and I will begin my third year in about two months.

For the coming academic year, I need to pay about $400 for my hostel [room] fees. I need about $150 more to pay within two weeks to top up the payment I have already made so that I don’t lose my bed.

With my bead business (earrings, bracelets, necklaces), I am able to buy my books and other lecture materials, food, transportation to school and back home. For about one and half years now I have made and sold several copies of these products at school and at home. People buy them for programs like parties and weddings, among others. With the help of social media like Facebook and WhatsApp, I have been able to pull a crowd of customers who are getting really interested and excited about my products. This has increased my customer base and my profit margin. It is with these profits that I have been able to pay part of my hostel fees.

My younger sister and I are catered for by our mother, who receives a little support from my elder brother. It has not been easy for them since our needs always exceed the available resources.

I know with the help of you lenders and team Zidisha, I will be able to secure a place for the next academic year. When I am able to secure the hostel, learning will be smooth for me because I will not have to struggle with where to lay my head in school. Thank you.

Since I reopened school I have had some struggle with finances and that is why my repayment has delayed.

With the help of the zidisha loan I have successfully paid my hostel fees in full and I have a bed secured for the entire academic year. I am very grateful to my lenders.
