About Me

i am peter karanja born in nakuru district but lives in thidigua in kiambu. i have a strong heart in small scall farming especially in rearing pigs.Although pig farming hasn’t really picked up in kenya like other parts of the world, a few entrepreneurs are already enjoying the lucrative benefits of this enterprise. Despite cultural and religious influences in parts of our continent that limit pork production and consumption, pig farming is growing across West, East, Central and Southern Africa. In this section, i have a concrete testimony of the inspiring experiences of four small-scale pig farmers in Kenya, South Africa and Uganda.

My Business

With a contract in hand, i received funding from a self help group to buy a 0.5-hectare farm property. and from just four pigs, my new farm now holds nearly 60 pigs at a time and supplies roughly 10 pigs a week to retailers in nairobi. i currently employs about 3 staff and has become something of a celebrity pig farmer on the area.
In kenya for example, pork has overtaken mutton/lamb in consumption following the 59 percent rise in pig production. Another interesting example is african countries like Morocco, an overwhelmingly Muslim country. Moroccan pig production is increasing to cater to the demand of millions of tourists (especially Europeans) who visit the North African nation every year. According to this article, its quite interesting that the major pig farmers in Morocco are Muslims and Jews (who do not consume pork for religious reasons). This interesting trend is sure to continue as Africa’s cities grow to accommodate more foreign tastes.

Loan Proposal

Thanks am happy to have my loan approved,am looking forward to to add some more pigs in my small scale farm which i will buy some piglets for the same . but with the small amount i will get i will build some houses for the piglets.i believe in due time i will be able to sell my product in large quantity thanks before where by i was getting about ksh 7000/= per month but i expect my income to raise from that amount to ksh 13000/=
