About Me

My name is Daisy Jeptepkeny. I was born in October 1996 and I am thus turning 27 years later this year. I enrolled at Mudasa Academy for my primary school education and sat for my KCPE exams in 2010. I then went to Bunyore Girls High School for my secondary school education. I sat for my Kenya Certificate of Secondary School Education exams in 2014 and did well.

I later got enrolled at JKUAT University on a private sponsorship programme to study law. The school fee was quite expensive and I majorly benefited from help from friends and relatives and my parents had to apply for loans as well. I managed to complete my studies and proceeded to do my postgraduate studies to be able to practice as an Advocate and qualified.

After qualifying, I tried severally to look for employment but was unable to. I had just given birth to my daughter who was only a few months old and despite being invited for a number of interviews, I was unable to get employment as all my potential employers kept saying I could not be able to concentrate on my work as a young mother. It was a bit frustrating considering I could also not start my own practice.

I then decided to take the opportunity to venture into farming and business. I had access to my parent's land and I decided to start rearing chicken for eggs and meat (layers and broilers) and to supply to businesses nearby. I also decided to cultivate vegetables and use the waste from the chicken as manure. My business has been growing steadily.

My Business

I started chicken farming on a small scale. I was able to put up a small structure of wood and wire mesh. I also needed an enclosed space with heating for the chicks which I bought at one day old. I managed to buy one broiler chick at Kshs. 100/=. I installed a heater to manage the temperatures. I also bought chick mash, pellets, medicine, layers mash, broilers mash and other local feeds and had to layer the pen with sawdust.

I do both layers and broilers. I sell the eggs from the layers and dispose of the broilers once they mature. I buy one-day old chicks every three weeks so that the supply of broilers is constant. My chicken pen is therefore divided into several parts for the young chicks, three week olds, siz weeks and so forth. I collect eggs daily too.

The demand for eggs and chicken meat is growing and I am unable to meet the demand with my supply. Since my business is steady, I have identified the market niche which I need to capitalise on.

I need to do construction of new structures for the kitchen to have more space. I also need to employ three more people to help with taking care of the chicken. The construction cost is approximately going to cost around Kshs. 90,000/=. I'll need more cash to buy the chicks and chicken feeds. Each chick is about 130/= and the feeds are expensive too. I also need to buy other materials such as saw dust which I change monthly to avoid diseases and pests.

I also do farming where I plant kales, spinach, onions, tomatoes, traditional vegetables and carrots. I use the waste from the chicken as manure.

Project Proposal

I have an ultimate goal of turning my business into a large scale venture. I intend to use the loan to buy foodstuffs for the chicks I just bought.
