My names are George Ngugi, am born again, married to one wife Elizabeth. I live in Omega Saika Nairobi along Kangundo road.
I am co founder of Soft leather company that deals with leather processing.
The company is young and growing with promise of expansion given the market availability across east Africa and across the region.
We get our products from nearby slaughter houses and market is readily available.
I have years of experience in leather processing having worked in various companies based in Nairobi Kenya.
The potential for growth in Kenya’s leather industry is considerable. The government estimates that value addition could more than double the current earnings to ksh 9 billion. The country has in recent years produced over two million hides (mainly cattle, with some camel) and around four million skins (goats and sheep).
The products in this sector include raw hides and skins; chrome tanned hides; wet blue skins and hides; shoes and she uppers/ footwear; finished leather; semi-finished leather products and PVC coated fabrics.
We are therefore involved in leather processing which forms the basics of our revenue.
I am involved in Leather processing in small scale that i work from my home. I process leather in the following stages:
1. Soaking so as to make it wet.
2. Liming so as to remove hair
3. Tanning so as to turn it from skins to leather.
4. Re-tannage so as to make it complete leather.
5. Padding so as to make it ready for market.
There are other processes which however am not doing in my place because i don't have the equipments. These are shaving, spitting and plating.
I will use the loan provided to me to purchase additional hides and skins in my tannery so that i can process enough leather for my customers.
