l am the 4th born in a family of six children. I went to primary school in Gem East Sub - Location of Homa Bay County. I completed primary education in 1997 and I didn't proceed to High School due to lack of school fee, though I scored 356 Marks out of 700 Marks.
After staying home for one year without going to school, I joined a local youth polytechnic to pursue a two-year Certificate Course in Tailoring and Dressmaking. After completion of the course, I was employed by a relative as a dressmaker in his boutique shop. I worked for 1 year and saved enough money to buy one sewing machine which I used to start my own dressmaking shop.
Mbita Township is a cosmopolitan community, with a large population which make demand for custom-made clothes very high. The local schools do buy school uniforms from the local tailoring shops hence the need for dressmaking is high in and around Mbita Township.
My eldest boy would like to be a pilot when he grew up. I like visiting friends during weekends..
I make customized dresses, shorts, shirts and long trousers that I sell locally to the the general population and schools uniforms for nursery and primary school children.
The school uniforms are in high demand since its compulsory for all the schools children to go to school with uniforms. There are 12 nursery schools with enrollment population of about 2,500 children and with those factors highlighted above makes demand for the uniforms i.e Socks, Sweaters,T-Shirts, Shirts.
The demand for clothes that I sell to the general public is also high especially lady's clothes because there are quite a number of institutions in Mbita and most students like to change with fashion of the day.
The clothes that I sell are liked by most residents as they are, cheap,
accessible and affordable and to some clients I do deliver directly to their homes. In-addition, most residents buy from me because my business is strategically located within the town where most residents assemble whenever they want to buy clothes.
I chose this kind of business because before I stated this business I was doing the same job with my uncle in his boutique shop and therefore I have long-term relationships with various customers who contact me whenever they need special cloths such as men's and lady's wear.
In a good month, I do get Ksh 15,000 which I use to pay rent, school fee for my 3 children i primary school and 25% I do re-invest in the business. With the help of Zidisha loan I will be able to increase the stock of my boutique especially school uniforms which are in demand.
For the last whole month, this is the sales break-down:
1. Total Monthly Sales=Ksh 15,000.
2.Re-investing more clothes & school uniforms= Ksh 8,000
3.Business Rent=Ksh 2,000
4.Miscellaneous=Ksh 2,500
The total net profit was Ksh 3,500.
With the loan, my business will grow more than it is today as I will be able to increase the school uniforms and other clothes. Thank you in advance to you all.
With a loan of Ksh 6,034. I will buy assorted school uniforms, socks, shirts and materials to make dresses for sale. The profit realized will be used to meet my family food needs, pay school for 3 children in primary schools and 40% of the profit realized used to repay the loan on a weekly basis.
The loan will enable me to grow my business and comfortably meet my family needs.
