About Me

I am Richard Wasonga Otieno, I was born in 1984 in the rural village of Kagwa in Raried Sub County of Siaya County, Kenya. I was the 1st born among five siblings (all died in their childhood except me who survived to date). I did not manage to go to high school due to lack of school fee though I passed my final primary education very well. My parents were very poor and could not manage to educate their children upto high school level amidst poverty.

As the 1st born, my mother did not have money to feed the family adequately, so I resorted in helping my mother in working at the farm to feed and educate my four siblings who eventually died perhaps due to malnutrition as the farm was not doing well due to lack of rains as we depended on rains for watering the farm.

My early life was so hard and it was not easy to get food. I struggled to learn but it was impossible, however I got an education by doing chores for people in the nearby urban centers and managed to attend some informal schools.

Besides the farm, my mother would make and sell buns to kids at break in the nearby Kawuondi Primary school and I would be by her side wrapping the buns which we sold at 5KES per bun (approx 0.05 US cents). I learned how to make them and me and mother would wake up at 4 am to make them so that they could be ready by 6 in the morning. My mother was a very hardworking woman and she managed to raise us well. We never went hungry and we were always helping her in our farm where we kept local chicken and goats.

Having dropped from school, I got married and so far our marriage has been blessed with 2 children. All my children are going to school. In my free time, I do participate in youth forums for discussions on entrepreneurship, HIV & AIDS among other current themes on social & economic context.

My Business

I run the business of selling Motorcycle spare parts and puncture repair. I have been in the business for over two years now. I moved to motorcycle spare parts because I saw the great potential of the business, especially now that many people are buying motorcycles which regularly need repair. I run my shop along the main Mbita - Homa Bay Road. I buy my wares from business persons who import them from Asia, mainly China. I have every motorcycle spare part one can need. Most of my customers are motorcycle taxi operators who work in the rural parts Mbita Sub County.

I recently added a puncture and tube repair machine. This service is in high demand and I look forward to improving my business with the increased income from this service.

Loan Proposal

I am seeking a loan of KES 9,526 to enable me buy assorted tools and equipment for tyres, tubes and puncture repair. I will buy 2 scissors, assorted glues, puncture tubes and water basin. This will improve my service delivery and I project a profit increment of 40% on a weekly basis. I will use the increased profit to repay the loan, pay my children's education fee and buy food for my family. I want to sincerely thank my would be lenders in advance for having trusted me with this 1st ZIDISHA loan.
