About Me

I grew up in the rural areas of Embu County. As a village girl, I assisted in the normal chores of fetching water from a river with a Jerican on my back, collecting firewood from the bush, cooking, looking after my young siblings and looking after livestock. I was also involved in picking coffee during the coffee season. I was also taken to school alongside my elder brother. Combining the roles at home and in school was challenging .My elder brother was taken to a boarding school in class four and I was left to continue in my village school.

Having been a par with my elder brother in school made me insist that I too wanted to join a boarding school. I felt that this would relieve me of the many chores I had to attend to and give me time to concentrate with my studies. My main motivation was that I would work very hard in my entire education to have a good job and my own money. Any time I dropped in my class work, I would remind myself that I needed to achieve my goal of having a good job and my own money. My school holidays were very busy with home chores but I maximized my school time and made the best from it. I excelled well up to University level.

I have been working in the Micro Finance sector since leaving the University. During my work days, I received a lot of entrepreneurial training, gained a lot of experience in training entrepreneurs and interacted with the business people. This made me learn a lot in business. I tried various businesses during my Micro Finance working days which I contracted people and supervised over the weekends. This included agri–business ( I grew garlic and potatoes ), restaurant and selling clothes. However, due to commitment at my place of work and change of duty stations, I decided to only concentrate on the Micro Finance job. However, the zeal to undertake a business venture was in me .I decided to volunteer in Namibia where I worked with business communities through business training. Since this is what I felt I knew best, when I came back to the country I took it up as a business. I train women and youth in entrepreneurship, and savings and credit.

Land in Embu County is privately owned. Before 2010, land was inherited by sons but after the new constitution, daughter can now inherit land too. Women are also allowed to buy land on willing buyer willing seller basis. My son wants to be a lawyer.
I am involved in community projects in my county which includes construction of tanks, health facilities etc.

My Business

I am a trainer / consultant in entrepreneurship, women enterprise associations and microfinance. In entrepreneurship I offer ILO tool – Gender and Enterprise Together ( GET Ahead ),a hands on practical tool which suits all calibres of people including people with low literacy levels.

My services are in demand at county levels, self-help groups, Non-Governmental and Faith Based Organisations. I enjoy training business people and seeing businesses grow to sustainable and profitable ventures. My typical costs include Marketing the trainings, accommodation and meals during the trainings, proposal writing (responding to bids), transport, training materials and equipment. My revenue is the professional fee I charge.

I use the income that I get to to pay school fees for my child and my younger siblings. I plan to diversify and start my own NGO to enable me support a wider range of beneficiaries.

Loan Proposal

I will use USD20 to purchase flip charts in large quantities because they are cheaper. I will then use USD25 to buy mark pens, note books and masking tapes for the trainings. I will use another USD35 to hire a hall another USD30 to hire a public address system. In addition, I will spend a further USD15 to hire a projector.
