I am Martin Thumbi.I was born an brought up in kitale town, found in the county Trans Nzoia, Kenya. I was brought up by a single parent after my parents separated when I was 5 years old. I am the first born of a family of four children, two boys and two girls.
My mother worked as a peasant farmer in a small farm.
I attended Bondeni primary schools and later on proceeded to Bondeni Day school. I was in and out f school due to lack of school fees. Fortunately through bursaries and help of well wishers from our community church, I was able to complete high school.
I passed very well and was admitted to Maseno University. I studied Bachelor of Arts degree in Development Studies.
I found it hard to pay my school fees and decided to start selling cakes and tea to my fellow students in order to cover my fees.
I own a hotel in Kitale CBD. I sell all kind of foods and beverages in my hotel.
Most of my customers are travellers due to the fact that my hote is adjacently located to kitale bus stop.
My services are commendable and affordable as frequent travellers opt to come whenever they are on transit.
I chose this industry because I had started the cake and tea selling business in campus. This gave me the courage, experience and expertee in conducting business and food handling services related to the hotel industry.
On average I earn a minimum of $300 a month. The funds help in paying bills e.g. rent, transport, electricity e.t.c. I also use the profit to pay for my siblings school fees and some is spent in the upkeep of my parent.
I save a certain percentage of my earnings which I majorly use to improve my business and also invest in more modern alternative ways of food handling.
I want to buy more chairs for my hotel. The numbers are becoming overwhelming and the seats are not enough. This will increase customer satisfaction and accommodate more people. Hence more returns.
