About Me

My name is Samuel Kagiri Njoroge.I am a residence of Kiti Estate in Nakuru on your way to Bahati that is off Nakuru- Nyahururu highway.I am the third born in our family of nine members.My brothers and sisters have been employed in various places some here in nakuru and in other towns.I joined KITI,Kenya Institute Of Technology where i got a certificate of Electrical Engineering.I was later employed as a technician at Kenya Power and Lighting Services(KPLC).
I ventured into farming and decided to put up a Rabbit keeping project at my home which I bought two years ago.To my knowledge and experience in rabbit keeping,rabbits should be strongly integrated into traditional farming practices especially here in Kenya, because this will normally entail the recycling of garden and kitchen refuse as rabbit feed and the conversion of rabbit manure into compost for enhancing farm soil and as we in most parts of Kenya depends on Agriculture, and thus animal feed and fertilizer costs can be minimized through this integrative approach.

Rabbit keeping is one of the best projects in Kenya as more and more people are turning from red meat to white meat.I do it also as a hobby and as a learning experience i also teach youths.the manure from rabbits makes excellent compost rich in nutrients and organic matter for gardening.Me and my family members share labor. Before i started out this project, i first identified my goal and the benefits from farming rabbit.I am planning to produce more rabbits of which i can see the progress i have made for past two years.I started with 10 does and buck and now i normally feed more than 200 of them. There are a very high demand of rabbit meat in my area as i have never satisfied my local customers.Alternatively ,rabbits can be housed over fish-ponds a project am intending to approach very soon,whereby blue-green algae production can be increased to enhance fish harvest,and while rabbits may be fed on inexpensive forage and garden wastes grown along the pond banks.Also rabbit manure can be converted into methane gas to meet household fuel needs.In recent years there has been increased awareness of the benefits and advantages of rabbit meat production as a means to alleviate food shortages which is largely attributable to the rabbit's high rate of reproduction limited competition with humans for similar foods,high quality nutritious meat ,early maturity,rapid growth rate,high genetic selection potential, efficient feed and land space utilization.There are a very high demand of rabbit meat in my area as i have never satisfied my local customers.On a good month am able to make Ksh15,000 as net profit on rabbit farming alone.I would love to expand my project to a big one with the help from your community of Zidisha team.
