About Me

I am Esther Chepkwemoi Wandera.Fifth born in a family of seven.
I have been a successful agribusiness lady ever since I started my first year at the university of Eldoret.I started business so that I be able to pay part of my school fee which my parents couldn`t afford fully. Now have got no other commitment toward my schooling since I have finished. My focus now is on the business capital base.I like playing guitar and also sing in church.I`m a team player both in school, church and at home.I have developed leadership traits in
different fields.Currently I`m very happy because I heard long ago from some of my mentors that your network equals your net worth.By making many friends during my extra time, my worth also rises.

My Business

The business I`m doing I started by rearing large scale kienyeji chicken from 2009. this project has been quite exciting since the demand of kienyeji chicken has been overwhelming and the prices of its products are amazing despite the low cost of production. This project I must say has brought forth awesome results, this is because as we are talking now am among the key distributors of local chicken breed in the neighboring schools and hotels.I just wrote a
Project proposal to them and I was give order through contracts.Due to overwhelming demand of local chicken breed, l purpose to expand my poultry unit and more so open other branches of poultry production in other areas.
In this expansion I have purposed to obtain the improved chicken breed from KARI (i.e Kenya Agricultural Research Institute) because of the advantages I have learnt from research.Kari has come up with a new breed of indigenous chicken that offers better yield.
The breed was developed after years of intensive research under the National Poultry Development Programme.
Kari’s senior researcher at Naivasha Poultry Development Institute Ann Wachira said the super breed develops faster, is highly resistant to diseases and has high productivity.
“This is a hen that achieves 1.5kg in about five months when the rest of the indigenous breeds take up to seven months or more,” she told Seeds of Gold.
“Its ability to withstand harsh conditions is amazing. The feathering system makes it adjust faster than the time taken by others to acclimatise with any climatic conditions, including the arid and semi-arid regions.”
It took Kari 10 years to develop the bird after studying the strengths and weaknesses of different breeds of indigenous chickens across the country.
“We went to several parts of the country including Turkana, picked chicken and brought them to our laboratories. We then studied them to establish their weaknesses and strengths and then interbred them to produce the best breed.”
A day-old chick of the new breed costs Sh100 at the Naivasha centre but farmers who don’t have brooders can buy four weeks old chicks at Sh250 each.
Before releasing them to farmers, the institute vaccinates the chickens from the deadly marecks disease and culls the weak ones to prevent them from going to the market. It also provides the farmers with a vaccination guideline.
The chicken is easy to maintain since it can be kept under the free range system or deep litter depending on a farmer’s financial ability and objectives.
Those who want them to mature faster or produce more eggs are advised to keep them in a semi-intensive or deep litter system. This way, the chickens don’t spend a lot of energy. Farmers have an option of keeping them as layers, for meat or both.
When fed with quality feeds available from accredited manufacturers, a hen can reach up to 1.5kg in five months and a cock weighs 2.1kg.
A fully grown local cockerel costs $12 while a hen costs $7.5. A hen can produce between 220 and 280 eggs a year. This is almost similar to a white leghorn exotic layer kept in a deep litter system.
With a tray of local eggs costing an average of $5, compared to exotic ones at $3.5, farmers who will keep local chicken as layers stand to make get good earnings. I believe this will increase the production and thus help in meeting the high demand thus in the long run improve the living standards of the society at large by creating employment.I`ll repay the loan with returns from my business.Since I have completed my university course, have got time now to make profits and even repay any loan without struggle. My monthly return ranges between $ 200.

Loan Proposal

Once I get the loan,I will first of all budget on stock increment. This is because the products I`m dealing in are basic in the society especially restaurants and Hotels, Collages and Universities, Events like weddings and political rallies.Sometimes I get huge order that I may not be able to deliver given that my capital base is low.
By increasing my capital ,another demand is their food which I`ll have to source frequently. Lenders need t o consider my humble request because this is a business that`s doable and has market.I look forward to seeing my business expand to several counties. Currently , I enjoy monopoly since I`m the key distributor here.
This business will not only benefit me but also the society as wastes from poultry are used in farming locally hence another source of income.
The cost of medium size chick is averagely $5.Suppose I get an order of averagely 50 chicken in a month, that will bring me a return of $250. If I remove expenses, net profit may be $80. I believe that my customer base will not overwhelm me.Lenders support will put me ahead of many other people.I look forward to humble response.
