My name is Mactildah Simiyu.I was born and raised by my biological parents at the country side.My parents being of middle class family managed to educate me through the sell of vegetables and livestock.I went through primary, secondary then did my College at Asumbi Teachers Training College in Kenya.I started Salama Centre in January 2010.I was running the school in the low income area of Mukuru Slum. This started when as a Director,I realized or rather noticed a big drop in children enrollment in my school due to non-payment of school fees. With the number of orphans increasing after every day.Besides the change of guard from one guardian to another kept on increasing. With these changes I could not manage to run the school but sought the support of guardians to form a group of women who came together to form a neighbourhood association focused on encouraging and supporting each other in times of difficulties. This culminated into merry go round where members raised funds to support one another in monthly basis.Once in a while the association would reach out to the school centre and support in any kind of work that they would be asked to do,and also encourage other women spiritually especially those bereaved, majority as a result of HIV/AIDS.It also supported the orphans to ensure they are in school through out.The land is of mixed culture and people are united to work together. The children of salama centre are now encouraged and hope to start their centres in future and reach out in helping those in need.My hobby entiled planting trees around the school which is now providing us with shade and acting as wind break.
The centre name is Salama Centre which means peace,The school started in 2010.These are orphans and vulnerable children. The school is located in Makadara Division in Nairobi.I started the school with 20 children and one teacher in one rented room, that is 12 girls and 8 boys and the class was baby class. The school is now hosting 100 children. The school has a section for babies and the other section is for primary section.I used the resources from merry go round as an income generating activity to buy food. Our expenses goes to sh $ 322.58 per month and $ 161.29 remains in the account in case of any emergency.I had a sponsor by the name Lori Miller from united states. She helped us for 2 and a half years until she passed on in February 2014 having suffered from stroke(may her soul rest in peace)Our vision is to envisage a future where majority of children have access to education, shelter and good health. Our mission is to strengthen the capacity of orphans in order to reduce their vulnerability to various forms of violence, abuse, exploitation and HIV/AIDS infection by enabling them acquire education and have access to good education.
