About Me
My name is Joyce Wangui Kimaru I grew up in Nyeri Municipality and attended a primary school there. Live was not easy for me and younger sister because my parents were poor and we lived in the slums. My mother worked as a cleaner in a restaurant in town and my father was absent most of the time. After being unable to continue with the poor live in town we moved to our rural home in Karatina where I joined a local high school.
Although the high school fee was not much my parent would be unable to pay the whole amount at once and so I would find myself being sent home to get the fee balance very many times and this lend me to perform poorly in my final examination.
After high school I knew that now I was on my own so I started going for casual work of picking tea and when I had saved enough to start life alone I moved from our and went Nyeri town where I rented a room and got a job as a server in a small restaurant. I was not earning good money but it was better than being at home. I work and made savings that allowed to a secondhand clothes business. I started by going to the people who could afford to buy clothes in bails and select a few clothes that I would hawk in the town. I worked hard until I was able to buy my bail. Later along the Kiva Zip came and when I took my first loan my business was transformed because today I am able to sell both in retail and wholesale although not large scale wholesale. Kiva Zip rolled up in Kenya but not before I had taken a nd repaid a loan of 30000 KES . I later joined mfi.loans and now I am on my second loan.
I have two children who have not started school with the one being four years and the other is 18 months. I want them to have better life than me, go to a good school that will offer them the opportunity to be respectable and successful in life.<input name="aboutMeTimestamp" type="hidden">
My Business
I sell second hand clothes in Isiolo town on a hand curt and I specialize on children wear because they the move faster than adult wear. The reason I choose this business is because it did not require a lot of money to start and also did not require me to rent a business premises. I actually started by hawking my ware from house to house and along the road sides.
I buy one bail of children mixed clothes at 10500 KES and would at least make three purchases of 21000 KES each month thus I spend about 70000 KES .I sell part of this in wholesale and the rest in retail. Each bail gives me about 5000 KES so in a month I get 30000 KES.
I have managed to buy a plot which cost me 70000 KES and I have plans of constructing a three bedroomed stone house . I pay for hospital insurance and want to get an affordable education plan for my children.<input name="aboutBusinessTimestamp" type="hidden">
Loan Proposal
I'll buy three bales of secondhand clothes at a cost of US$300 and I expect my income will grow by over 20% , I'll comfortably take care of my family and grow the business.
In a day I make about 500KES but if I can bring in a bigger stock this will raise to 600KES or more. I'll also be in a better position to grow the business by returning for more clothes sooner hence increasing my monthly income.
