Born in a rural village, Trans-Nzoia county, Kenya. Parents divorced at age 12 while in class 3. Lived with mother till secondary school, but she fell ill before I was admitted to form one, bed ridden. Moved by my good performance at primary exam results, primary teachers facilitated me to join high school in a school of my choice. Mum passed away while in form one. Was hear breaking being only parent, but trusted God that all that happens, happens for a reason. My resolution to better life was education and education and education, without no one to pay my fee, the school head was compassionate and was not sent home for fee. Eventually finished, passed well, joined government sponsored university. Graduated with degree in Computer science. But job in Kenya was hard to come by, so took up tutoring duties in smaller colleges. Later decided that was not by itself sustainable, so ventured in agriculture from savings I had made. My free time activity is writing. Even owns a blog https://sabunipoetry.wordpress.com/
My business is in green house farming. With savings from tutoring in colleges, bought myself three medium sized green houses. Currently growing tomatoes, a seasonal vegetable, yet required throughout the year. I choose it since its a prime sector with a lot of potential yet many graduates shy away from farming activities and so the sector does not receive the expected skill for optimum production especially for small scale farmers. Thus I thought that its the right way to go.
Once the crop is planted from seeds which, for the three green houses, cost up to Ksh. 10, 000,
maintenance costs are lower as the crops are grown under controlled environment. so maintenance costs go up to utmost ksh 50, 000 in a year. Have run it for a year, proceeds were used to buy the water tank and piping for drip irrgation.
To buy a solar panel which I want to use as an energy source for pumping water to my green houses as the petrol pump is too costly. This should save me the money I use on petrol, and also the labor involved. The pump panels, three of them, will cost each
300 US $ . This should increase my total earning to about 2000 US $. from the current 1200 $, due to the efficiency in the consistency of water pumping and the reduced costs of petrol and labor.
