My name is Martin , My rural residence is Siaya. I have four children. The first-born is 13 years old in class 5, the second born is 7 years in class 2, the third born is 4 years old and the last-born is a one month baby. . I attended primary school in Ithanga in Machakos then i later joined a Technical Institute in Mumbuni in Machakos where i trained as a Motor Vehicle Mechanics, G3. After my accomplishment in training, i worked as a Mechanic for 4 years from the year 2000 up to 2004. Being a very hardworking and curious man, i had a friend who owned a Lathe Machine for woodwork who trained me on woodwork and started to work with him. In the year 2010, i bought a machine and started my own business in Siaya county. To expand my business skills i joined the ISBI business training where i had my eyes opened, i learned to keep records of all business activities, to monitor resources and more skills on how to deal with my clients.
I am a carpenter whose main specialization is carving the beauty formations in furniture. My initial training was as a mechanic, i happened to meet a friend who was a carpenter and doing this lethal woodwork, he trained me and also employed me, it is in this period that i realised woodwork had a promising market and i had a passion for this kind of woodwork. I had been operating from the slums but this year i shifted to Siaya town where i am currently operating. My main customers are the residents of Siaya area , this is an area with quite big population and this has enabled the demand to be good. I want to increase the machines i work with, employ more young men and expand my business.
In a month i make profits of $170 which i use for the upkeep of my family
Due to the emerging trends in this industry and the changing customer preferences I need to invest in some more materials so as to meet my customers expectations. With regards to this I plan to utilize the funds to buy more timber as indicated below:- 3*2 Cypress 300 feet - for Kshs. 5,500 2*2 Mahogany 100 feet - Kshs. 3,000 3*3 Pine 150 feet - Kshs. 3,500 With this timber I will be able to meet the needs of my customers, the different types of timber gives my customers a more variety of material to choose from for their furniture.
