I am an educated farmer based in one of the highlands in Kenyan located in Embu area where tea and coffee farming are the main livelihoods of people. I specialize in tea farming, cattle keeping and chicken rearing. I married with two children: the eldest is in class three, the second born is in class one. My wife helps me in my farming activities. Besides working on my farm, my wife and I also work on other people’s farms as casual workers. I am seeking a loan that will help me improve my farm so that I can focus my energy on my farm.
I am engaged in agribusiness. Tea farming is my main business although I also keep a dairy cattle and chickens. I earn about 90,000 Kenyan shillings annually as net profit from my dairy farming, tea farming and chicken rearing. Tea is a cash crop and in my country, we have an organized system where farmers’ main work is growing and nurturing the tea bushes and the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) markets and sells tea for farmers. We are paid monthly, and half year bonus and year bonus. Last year, I was paid Kenya shillings 57 per kilo of tea and I had delivered 1150 kilograms of tea bushes.
I am seeking the loan to improve my cash flow so that I am able to pay tea pluckers, and purchase fertilizer to increase tea productivity. I need two bags of fertilizers and one bag of fertilizer costs Kenya shillings 2000. The other money I will to pay workers because they demand their pay immediately after plucking tea although KTDA releases tea proceeds a month after delivering the tea. This will help me increase my productivity.
