About Me

I am 50 yr s old single mother of three the last born is in primary school. I live and work in ongata rongai where i do a small retail business I started business ten year ago after being employed for some years where I was not earning enough to sustain my family and I therefore ventured into this business which has been supporting me since then.

My Business

My business is a small retail green grocer kiosk operated in an open market along Magandi road in Ongata rongai township .I sell vegetables like tomatoes cabbages, kales, carrots and fruits and sometimes cereals during the harvest seasons.the business is very profitable as I buy in bulk and retail in small quantities Kg’s and small units. many customers prefer my business because I am able to provide fresh produce and best quality and I am also specifically situated in the main road near the bus stop. The major risk is the products we sell are perishable and cannot be stored for long therefore we have to buy daily from the whole sale markets and sometimes there’s is shortage which affect us but mainly during dry seasons only

Loan Proposal

Thank you lenders .I have paid back the loan you gave me last year and i am now asking for your assistance i n raising this one. It will help in improving my business by adding more stock as i had taken a good amount from my capital in paying school fees for my children who are back in school I intend to buy more stock of my supplies , the market has been changing and the costs have been going up but the supplies are now easily available .with this loan therefore i am planning ongoing to the farms and get the products by myself to at least see whether i can get better profits

    Hello Lenders,

My name is Vivien Barbier and I’m a client relationship interns for Zidisha in Kenya. Today, I had a meeting with Nancy Njoroge and two other Zidisha clients. After the meeting, Mrs. Njoroge brought me to the Magandi market in order to show me her retail business.

She is running a small grocery kiosk that sells mainly potatoes, tomatoes and onions. The kiosk is located in the open market of Ongata Rongai and is open every day. Mrs Njoroge started this business 4 years ago, after the death of her husband. She explain me that she decided to launch vegetable grocery business because if she didn’t succeed to sell the vegetable she could always put them in boiling water to feed her children. If found that it was a very smart way to select a business. Mrs Njoroge is a very impressive woman. She doesn’t speak a lot but when she says something it is always to say something smart. She needed the loan to increase her stock of vegetable. Since she can buy from her vegetable supplier only once a week, she had to have a big stock. During my visit, I was indeed surprised by the size of the potatoes mountain in the middle of her kiosk.

When I asked her about her children, she told me that two of them were now grown mans and that her 14 year-old daughters were studying in a private school. She explained me that private schools in Kenya are better than public schools and that her daughter would have more chances to find a good job with a good education. Mrs Njoroge is working very hard all week to put her daughter in a good school even if the price of the school is high.

Mrs Njoroge also told me that she was very thankful to Zidisha and its lenders for the support she got for her loan. Before joining Zidisha, she was borrowing money to banks at a rate of more than 24% per year. Such rates made it impossible for her to make ant profit. She explained me that she was scared of taking high interest rate loans because with it, small disruptions in the business could lead to huge financial problems. She told me that thanks to Zidisha’s loan, she was able to make a profit and to use some of it to buy more stock.

When we talked about her project for the future, she told me that she wanted to open a supermarket. Everybody laughed at the time, but now that I’m thinking of it, I remember that she is a very serious woman. So, I will not be very surprise if she finally manages to do it.
