I am a 47 year old Teacher of high school chemistry and biology. We have a family holding of about 5 acres,In it we practice dairy production and maize farming. There is enormous potential to increase production especially in dairy farming.I plan to increase the number of dairy cows at the rate of 4 per year upto about 40 cattle.I look at this project as my business. I aim to fight poverty in my area , which suffers very high unemployment,As my dairy project grows I will be able to offer permanent and stable employment to more people , currently have already employed 3 workers,Two men and one lady. The employment is on casual basis for now but as production increases I will be able To formalise the employment and give them better terms of service. My main reason for stating this bissiness was to improve my income in order for me to be able to take care of my sons ,the last two who are still quite young, ages 12 and 7/ 1/2 .In addition both of my parents are elderly and retired (Dad is 78 while mum is 75) They are dependent on me for various needs such as health etc.
The business I am involved in is in the field of dairy farming, currently I have two cows which are old and need to be replaced. The demand for milk in my area is very high due to the fact that my land is only about 10 km from Nakuru town , which has a population of about 400000 people.I sell about 30 litres every day, giving a gross profit of 900 kenya shilligs per day. This translates into about 27000 ksh per month, giving a trading profit of about 15000 per month. My main expenses are the following; Wages for 2 workers, 10000 ksh.
Drugs and vertinary services.
Livestock feeds.
Tick treatment.
Water bill.
In order to improve production, I plan to invest in the following,
New heifers.
Rehabilitation of the zero grazing unit.
Planting of livestock crops on about one and a half hectares in order to reduce feeding costs. Other improvements will include mechanisation of milking.
Placing the animals in an insurance scheme.
Buying a small processer for grinding feeds. The main risks in this project is Disease and lack of feeds which I will address in this re- investment that I am planniing.
The loan will be used to refurbish the dairy unit on my dairy milking shed, which is currently in a bad state , especially the concrete floor of the milking area, which is in need of resurfacing with a fresh layer of concrete. The drainage also needs to be improved for farmyard manure .Among the inputs I will buy is cement @ about 850 (4-5 bags) ballast and River sand. I also need to replace some of the timber posts which have decayed or suffered termite attack. The posts will also need to be treated with the anti termite pesticide.
