About Me

My name is Ruth Wairimu Gikonyo. I am a married woman and a mother of six children five girls and one boy. My first daughter is highly married while the others stay with me at home. My son completed schooling. My daughter just completed her form four exam and is taking a course in food and beverage management at a local college. The other two younger girls are in class four and five respectively. I did not get the chance to complete my studies. This prompted me to leave school in form two and get married. My husband and I settled in a one acre piece of land where I have been living up to now. I have been practicing farming since then. After I got married, tracks of land were loaded with pyrethrum as it was not only a major cash crop but a valuable one as well. The mismanagement of the pyrethrum board of Kenya prompted us to cut down the crop and venture into an alternative method of farming. We substituted the pyrethrum with food crops like maize, beans, kales, spinach cabbages and potatoes.
I am a farmer by profession and mainly deal with the growing of vegetables. I have been growing kales, maize, spinach cabbages and potatoes on my 1 acre piece of land since the uprooting of pyrethrum in our region due to poor prices. I have been in the farming business for then last twenty five years and this has helped me to feed my family and provide other basic needs to my family thus contributing to the meager earnings my husband acquires from his profession.

My Business

My produce is usually harvested in seasons depending on the climatic conditions at a particular time of the year. I invest 200 shillings in buying spinach seeds, 200 shillings in buying kales seeds and 500 shillings in buying maize seeds. I also use 10,000 shillings in buying fertilizers. I also spend 10,000 shillings in farm labour. The total cost in a planting season is shillings 21000 shillings. Due to financial constraints and lack of proper connections I sell my produce to brokers at a throw away price though it earns me about 30,000. This amount of money is so low compared to what I expect to earn and with a little help I would boost my profits and develop myself.
