About Me

My name is Dominic Ncunge Kirimi. I am from Meru County but currently living in Nakuru, Free area estate. I own a barber shop (Kinyozi as locally known). I was born in 1983, married and blessed with one child. I went to Iriene primary school in 1994 where I did my Kenya certificate of primary education in the year 2001 and qualified to join Nkubu Boys high school in the year 2002.Unfortunately due to the my father’s illness I was unable to finish my studies. His condition lasted for a year where he was admitted in Chogoria district hospital.
Unable to raise the school fees in Nkubu Boys I decided to join Meru institute of professional studies for my certificate in beauty parlour and hairdressing for eight months. Later I joined the job market where I was employed in a barber shop. I worked there for two years while saving some money. I had saved twenty thousand shillings when I thought of opening my own barber shop but the money was not enough. I talked to my brother who agreed to give me another twenty thousand shillings. The money helped me start my own barber shop in Meru town. I operated the barber shop until 2009 when very many people ventured into the business and this led to the reduction of my customers which adversely affected my profit. The other challenge was that my competitors came up with sophisticated equipment which could not match mine.

I decided to sell the business at ninety thousand shillings and relocate to Nakuru where I started another one. I was then an experienced man and my business went on very well. I have been saving some money in the bank and also am able to provide necessities for the family.

My Business

Nakuru town is a growing town within the Nakuru County. New industries are being set up because it is safe and that has created a gap for good barber shops around town and its environs. In my current barber shop I shave, trim, relax and massage men’s hair. In the last one month I have also ventured in manicure and pedicure. Men in town appreciate this service because it makes them look good.

Depending on the day, from the services offered I make at least Kshs 2,000 per day. After deducting the daily expenses of roughly Kshs 500 on consumables I am left with Kshs 1,500 which is around Kshs 45,000 per month. I also pay a monthly rent of Kshs 10, 000 which is inclusive of water and electricity, Two employees at a cost of Kshs 7, 000 each giving me a total of Kshs14,000. The Net income comes to Kshs 21,000 per month.

Loan Proposal

The money received from zidisha would be used to buy two modern barbershop chairs at kshs 20000, two clippers at Kshs 10000, one sterilizer machine at kshs 6000. This totals to kshs 36,000. The remaining amount would be ploughed in the business inform of barbersshop's consumables. This plan will allow me to employ two more barbers to attend to the ever increasing number of clientele that have been disappointed by the slow pace when attending to them.

    Hälsa Dominic,

I loaned you Money in good faith, and you have never made a repayment. When can I expect a repayment

    Dear lenders,
This is Analin Saturria McGregor and I work as Communications Associate with Zidisha. I currently lead the team following up with Kenyan borrowers in arrears.
Following up with clients who are late on their loan repayments can become a rather laborious activity for a number of reasons. During this year, we have increased our efforts in building capacity among our volunteers to provide them with the necessary knowledge and tools to help with this activity as their time commitments allow. We also continue to build a network of Volunteer Mentors in-country: many of them Zidisha borrowers, all of them have an outstanding knowledge of how Zidisha works and attempt to educate our borrowers better in how to interact with you every chance they get.
Dominic's case has been a challenging one. After several months of attempting to contact him, we finally received some news in May.
Dominic has sold his business to a person we do not have contact information from. We have attempted to retrieve some contact information for this person in order to understand what might have led to this decision. We also heard from Dominic's brother back in May that he had not been working for a while. His brother and the person who assisted him in posting his loan application have also informed us that he spent some time out of town dealing with a death in his family.
We will continue updating you as we know more. We are usually able to provide more frequent updates once direct communication with the borrower has been established. This allows us the best understanding of the situation. Nevertheless, we will continue in contact with those in country that are better placed to assist us in following up with Dominic.
Please accept our apologies in the delay to inform you. Thank you for your continued support!

Hälsa Analin! You certainly get an E for Effort following up on these late pays. I am shifting my focus out of Africa and into more reliable markets. Like you, I would like to see a higher degree of borrower responsibility. Keep up the good work. There are many wonderful African Businesspeople, and I hope to make funds available should the situation improve. I cannot afford, however, to "be that change".

    Dear Zidisha,
I have found that this website is composed of people who have common interests and ideas. It is very nice to meet people whom you have never met and yet they demonstrate a lot of confidence and trust in what is happening in Africa. We are getting closer to one another because of the Internet. The term "Global Village" is becoming true. Zidisha is bringing us together and now we are able to have access to funds that were not previously there, and when they were, they were reserved for those with large collateral to cover for those loans. The loans were also very expensive to manage. What the lenders are doing has irreversible benefit to most of us. God bless you.
    Thank you,
    Dominic

At home, my fiance cuts and trims my hair; otherwise I just do it myself. I haven't been to a hairdresser for years. However, I do like your spirit. You seem to have a good head for business and good skill to go with it. Good luck, and God bless!
