About Me

My name is Maria Adhiambo Otwalo, I am a Kenyan citizen, Born in Nakuru district. I live in Kimathi Estate. I went to Mukumu primary school. I then proceeded to Koru Girls. In the year 2007, I joined Rift Valley Institute of Technology in Nakuru where I studied diploma in information Technology (IT). After college in the year 2010, I was employed as a computer teacher in a college for two years. After a long research, I resigned from my job and decided to put up a computer business near the college where a use to teach because there was none. I started the business with my small savings and with a loan that I borrowed from microfinance called Malezi Bora. With this money I paid for the business license, acquired a room for five computers; bought chairs, computer tables, scanner and paid for internet bundles from a company called Orange Telkom Kenya. Bringing these services close to the college has really ease work for students who are doing projects that require a lot of research. The students are now able to do their research on the Internet, photocopy their notes and even scan their documents with a lot of ease.

My Business

I am running a computer business where I offer services such as typesetting, scanning, internet services such as browsing and designing of cards. my first month of the business was very slow but it picked up after wards. The second month of the business was very good and I manage to buy a photocopier machine in order to offer photocopying services. This increased my earnings and since then my business has been on the rise. The demand for these services has been on the rise because of the huge population of students who are always in need of computer services. I would like to expand this business by acquiring a bigger premise next to the college, add more computers, internet bundles, chairs and a laminating machine to cater for the increased demand for my services. This will increase the profits of my business. In future, I’m planning to open another computer center in a different area around a college to cater for increased demand from students.

Loan Proposal

I am operating my cyber near a college.I have tried to increase the number of computers in my cyber but the number of students that I get daily is still too high compared to the number of computers that I have at the present. I will want to increase the number of computers in by cyber to cater for the many students that come daily in my cyber. I am also still planning to open another computer center around another nearby college to cater for students needs.

I am really sorry for the delay in my payments. I am experiencing low business since the month of September. I have been strangling with my payments but it has reached a point where I can't afford to pay as I had stated. I had opened a cyber near a college because there was none but now the college has opened its on cyber to cater for the students needs. All the students who use to come to the cyber has now turned to the college cyber. I no longer get customer from the students like I use to. I therefore request to pay an amount which I can afford to pay at the moment as I look into ways of improving my business.

No problem, Maria. I hope your business will pick up soon. If you have the time and resources, maybe you could teach more computer classes? The college cyber is probably busy with people using the Internet for research and email/Facebook/etc., so perhaps if you offered lessons that would fill a need? Of course, this might not fit your situation, it was just an idea. Anyway, I hope you are doing well. All the best,

      Kirsten

xavier thank you for giving me your support when I needed it. The money that you gave me enabled me to add some more computers. I placed them in a separate room in order to help primary going pupils to learn Internet. The pupils will be coming to the cyber once a week to learn internet.

As I had informed you earlier about opening another computer centre. I have indeed opened another computer centre. The place is still new. The business has not yet picked up well because the students are still at home for Easter holidays.I have paid license, rent and bought five computers and even install the internet cables. I still need to buy more sits for the cyber. This is why I am rescheduling my loan so that i can have more money to fund this project. Thank you

Thank you so much Mårten, you have really enlighten me. For sure my fear has always been power surges. Because the last time it happened it really caused me a lot of trouble. You are right I need to get a UPS. I will buy and install it. right now it is raining day and night and there is a lot of power surges. I am sure I will be able to save on repairs and buying new computers. Thank you once again for your advise. I really appreciate

    Dear Maria,
with stellar performance in your 1st loan, I am sure you will soon be funded this time too! Maybe something for surge protection, UPS, etc. could be purchased though, even though you may have to buy one computer less? Even though I'm sure you've budgeted for losses due to surges, it would be a shame to suffer one again so soon.

    Best of luck,
    Mårten

I wish to reschedule my loan in order to pay ksh 1500 instead of Ksh 900. I managed to repair one of the computer that was spoiled because of power blackout. The other computer was not repairable, so I was forced to buy one new computer. I am now back to business as before. This has enable me to get money to pay for my loan.I therefore wish to pay Ksh1500.

I wish to reschedule my loan in order to pay my loan in small instalments. This will leave me with enough more to improve my business. I lost two computers when there was a power black out. The power went off but when it came back, there was a power surge that spoiled two of my computers. This computers now need repair that is why I am no longer able to pay much to my account. I will be using my money to repair or even buy new computers

The loan that I was given by Zidisha micro- finance together with my savings enabled me to acquire a bigger premise, add seven computers, internet bundles, fifteen plastic chairs, two laminating machines, printing and photocopying papers. I am now able to serve many students per day. My incomes has gone up well. I now wish to remit more money to Zidisha in order to clear my loan.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my lenders for making may dream come true. As I am talking to you now, I have already found a bigger premise that does not charge higher rent. I have also ordered seven computers, two laminating machines, printing and photocopying papers from Nairobi. For the internet bundles, I am still doing some wiring in the premise. I am also planning to bring in the fifteen plastic chairs once the computer's tables are ready. Thank you so much Zidisha people and my God bless you abundantly.
