About Me

I am in Agri-business, which is a passion I acquired from my early childhood days while growing up in rural Kenya in Trans-Nzoia District, Kibomet. My parents depended on agriculture and we grew up knowing that if we did not plough the shamba and grow crops or take care of the cattle that produced milk for sale, we would not have an education. I therefore embraced agriculture fully.

I currently live in Kisumu with my family; my husband and 3 children. Kisumu is not a highly agricultural area, however, I have not let that put me down. I am currently keeping Local (kienyeji) Chicken for eggs and meat in my plot in Kisumu and also a vegetable garden. We have drilled a borehole in the plot and have sufficient water for irrigation that enables us supply vegetables even in the dry season.

It gives me lots satisfaction to see that I can produce food not just for my family but for the community around me and make an income out of it.

My Business

I started my Agri-business farming in the year 2013 when my husband and I purchased a ¼ acre plot in Kibos area in Kisumu a 10 minutes drive from my current residence. Our intention is to build our home in this plot, however since we do not enough finances to build a house, we decided to start up Agri-business.
We started off with building a chicken house that can hold up to 300 chicken and bought some chicken from a local market to start off the farming.

My chicken have grown in number and i am able to get 3 crates of eggs per week that i sell at Ksh. 450 per tray. This amount goes to buy food and other expenses.

I believe Zidisha will enable me grow my business and transform my life and my family. Thank you!

Loan Proposal

I have applied for the Zidisha loan of $150. First, i must appreciate the loan of $50 that i took earlier that assisted me greatly in my farm to purchase a brooder and chicken feed.

Currently i have 130 chicks that are 3 weeks old. 82 of them were hatched from my hens and i bought 50 cockrels from Uganda. I lost 2 due to cold but the rest are growing well.

When i get this loan, i will purchase a 70 kg bag of Chick mash of $28, and a 70 Kg Kienyeji mash of $22.4. I will also construct paddocks that will cost about $40 in the chicken house to separate the chicks when they get to 8 weeks so that they don't live with the maturer hens. I also need to make some curtains $20 for the chicken house so reduce the wind coming into the chicken house when windy and raining.

In my garden, I was able to get an average harvest from green peppers that i had planted which I used at home and sold some to my neighbors and friends. The challenge i have noticed is that the soil is not very rich in nutrients. I have got a source for manure that i will buy to enrich the soil. A 70kg bag costs $4.5. i will buy 10 sacks totaling to $45.

I kindly request for your support in this venture. Thank you!

Thank you Rosemary for funding my project.

My name is Mercy and I am a Home Baker.

I will be purchasing a cake mixer with the amount and will help my work to be easier as my mixer broke down and I have currently been mixing the cakes by hand. Be blessed!

Zidisha, I kindly request you to reschedule my loan because a small challenge I have had this week in the family. We are currently on course of moving to the farm and have started the construction of a semi-permanent house. In preparation to this move, we have incurred a lot of expenses to enable us to secure water and electricity services by applying for water at the Kisumu water And Sewerage Company and for Electricity by the Kenya Power Company.

The costs were somewhat much and have strained our family budget. This is just this week and I am certain that I will be on track next week.

Kindly accept my request. Thank you

Lenders, these are some of the things i bought. A brooder that costed $12, kienyeji mash- 70 kg bag (chicken feed)- $ 24, wood shavings- $5, charcoal to be used in the night for the brooder $11.

In the picture below, you can see 8 chicken that are brooding. I am expecting to get at least 50 chicks after they hatch.

I have also ordered for 50 chicks of a breed called the Black Cooper Maran that i intend to stock to benefit from the Christmas demand for loval chicken meet.

Once again i say thank you to my lenders. I will be asking for some more money within the nest three weeks. I am depending on you and others for your support. Be blessed!
