My name is Ruth Phiri I come from a family of 4 children and I'm the first born child and I have a 2 month old babe. Since primary school I have had interested in doing business because both my parents are business people. Immediately I completed my high school at Nyenyenzi secondary school in matero of Lusaka east. I enjoy working hard and have time to explore new opportunities and grow my career. I keep my younger brother and my daughter through this business of selling salaula since I high School. I manage to pay rent and buy food and also pay for my younger brother school fees. I love to travel meet new people and explore new business opportunities. As a woman I sometimes find it hard to keep my business and my family because my business is too small. I'm planning to expand it and open other spot because it has gained more demand over the past few months. The business is located in Lusaka capital city of zambia.
My business involves of ordering the bales of salaula and resale it to my client who visit my stand. I oder the bales in the local from Indian shops each bale I buy at K6500 and I resale it at K9500 to K11,500 it depends with how quality that particular bale is. Roughly I make a profit of K3000 to K4500 per bale and I manage to sale 1 to 2 bales in a week depending with the business on that particular week. The challenge I have is manage to constantly stock enough stock due low capital sometimes when the demand is high I tend not to meet my customers demand due to low stock. I have customers that come from other towns to buy from me. I'm hoping that when I find enough money will be ordering enough stock and never run out of stock because if I can at least order 5 to 10 bales and extend my business to other areas will be even better, I will make enough profit to sustain my living with my family and also pay back the loan from Zidisha.
With the funds raised I will order drinks, African wrappers and bales of salaula. I have a stand in Lusaka city along Simon mwewa lane market where i sale drinks, African wrappers and home curtains. I oder a bale of curtains then I open it and sort it out , those high quality and big one i sale them at K250 each pair and the small ones at K120 a pair. The bale costs me a K6500 to get 1 and this takes me a Week to finish selling it sometimes if business is good i can sale it a 2 to 3 days. When I finish selling the bale I get a K10,000 meaning I get to make a profit of k3500 from a bale alone and the drinks and wrappers I manage to sale k1900 to K2400 a week. This money i pay rent and help my family as well as Saving, I manage to save a K550 a month. So the money I will raise from Zidisha it will help me to buy some groceries for the house so that I don't use my business money I want it to multiply so that my business can grow into a big shop. The profit I'm make is enough to pay back my loan and pay it forward to fund other members.
