My name is Simon. I came from Narok County. I completed my high school in the year 2006 having gone through so many challenges in life. My parents were unable to take me to good school because they were not able to raise the required fee during that time. They had to take me to a local school in which the performance was poor due inadequate facilities.
In the year 2011, I got assistance from the government bursaries to go and study a diploma course in Library and information science. I completed it in the year 2014. From there I have been looking for the employment but in in vain. Immediately when I missed job opportunities I decided to venture into a farming business. As I had learned that we can too make a farming a business. I started planting tomatoes and cabbages for my up keep. I latter on learned that the land was becoming small as some of my brothers were planning to have the land partitioned as most people i n my community do to their children when they grow up. I therefore decided to utilize the little peace of plot to erect a green house structure.
My business right now is farming. I have made farming as a business. I have a green house where I plant tomatoes. I am a tomato farmer since I had to specialize in it. I plant a quarter of an acre. It takes three months to mature. Once they are all matured I can harvest twice a day, about three crates per day. One crate can fetch upto 2000KES i.e. 20USD per week. I sell locally too since they are consumed daily.
Since the farming is the back bone of our economy i am one of the youth who like farming because the resources are available at all time.
The skill and experienced that i gained from different seminars and field day will help a lot in my work as a farmer.
In my area most farmers depends on cattle keeping hence it will give me a room to get ready market for my tomatoes.
Sometime there is many challenges especially during rainy season and drought and i had seen its better not to keep up in life.
