About Me

My family lives in Dakar, me I live with my big brother Moussa Seck and my little sister Anta Seck. My job is breeding birds such as budgies, cockatiels, chickens for meat, and also sea turtles. Since I was small I have been devoted to raising animals. I started this business to realize my future, what I buy with my profits is what I increase my production with. I am an ambitious youth who wishes to suceed with breeding birds and also wishes to farm.

My Business

With 25 000 CFA ($50) I would like to sell chickens. I think that in this country in crisis only food really works. Customers will prefer my business (chicken) because my product isn’t expensive. The risks are poultry diseases. With my loan I will buy 15 chicks for 7500 CFA (500 CFA per chick) and the chicken feed for 15 000 CFA. With the 2500 leftover I will buy medicine to take care of the chicks. Production will last 45 days after which they’ll weigh 1.5kg and each chicken will be worth 2500 CFA, this means that 15 chicks*2500=37 500 CFA ($75).

Loan Proposal

Dear Lenders, Hello! I present to you my third project with Zidisha. I will continue to sell chickens. But I have continued to enlarge my ideas. With my third loan 142,840 XOF (246.05 USD), I can buy 50 chicks at 25,000 XOF ( 43.06 USD), 4 sacks of food at 60,000 XOF (103.35 USD), medicine for the chicks 10,000 XOF ( 17.23 USD), and the mulch and the transportation for materials 7,500 XOF ( 12.92 USD). This totals 102,500 XOF (176.56 USD). There remains 40,340 XOF (69.49 USD). I wish to make an egg incubator. I have a small, broken refrigerator I can modify to have an egg incubator. A friend he will ask 20,000 XOF (34.45 USD) and the incubator can hold up to 50 eggs or more. And after that, I will have more experience! And the 20,000 XOF (34.56 USD) that remains, I can repair my broken freezer. Thanks in advance for your help! Ameth

Hello ! I want to talk about my new breeding species !! these the "quail". Quail are small migratory birds of the subfamily perdicinae. They are very similar to partridges, though smaller. This term is of Germanic origin. for a start, I have commenced with 30 quails in one day and now they are 7 weeks and soon each female will lay one egg per day! Here is a link you can look www.lesvolaillesdarmor.fr/c...

Hi everyone! My name is Paige Klunk, and I am currently a Cultural Ambassador located here in Dakar. I wanted to write to give you a few updates about how Ameth’s activities are progressing.

I have known Ameth now for over a year, I first met him last summer while I was here in Dakar with Zidisha. He and I have become good friends, as he is always eager to share with me how his business activities are progressing. Even when I was home in the United States, he would sometimes send me pictures of his chickens as they were growing. Ameth is very passionate about animals, no matter whether it is chickens, quails, tortoises, fish, or even his two dogs. He always talks about animals with a big smile on his face.

Ameth raises the chickens on the third floor of his house. A small staircase leads you directly to the two bedrooms, which he has set aside for them. A brown tile covers the walls while the top of the two rooms are lined with blue cages. He keeps the chicks in the blue cages until they have grown big enough, after which he moves them down to the floor, which is covered with mulch. Lined with chickens, it is difficult some times to maneuver in and out of the rooms. The third floor, however, is not just the home for the chickens but for his two dogs as well.

With his second loan, Ameth was able to purchase 35 chicks at 17,500 XOF ($32), three sacks of food for 45,000 XOF ($90), medicine for 3,000 XOF ($6), transportation for the food 2,500 XOF ($5), and the mulch for the floor at 2,500 XOF ($5). Once the chickens were fully grown, he was able to sell each chicken for 2,500-3,000 ($5-$6). Since his second loan, he has been able to reap the benefits of 87,500 XOF ($175) each month as he been able to re-invest in his business. The benefits of the business have not only been financial autonomy for Ameth but it has given him financial structure to be able to advance his business.

When asked what the benefits of Zidisha have been for him, Ameth responded enthusiastically that it has been two-fold. He said first the loan has been able to make his activities more structured, as he has the financial engagement to repay at the end of every month. Secondly it gives him motivation and confidence to have big dreams for his business long term. Even though things are still kind of small, Ameth explained to me he wants to diversify. He has started experimenting with quail eggs. He has an old refrigerator he hopes to have fixed up soon to store the eggs.

Ameth’s passion for animals is what drives him to be successful with his activities. I hope I can only stop by again soon to see the continued progress of his activities!

    Dear Lenders!

I am writing to let you know I am back in Dakar for a few weeks for the holidays. I had the chance to stop by to visit Ameth last week to see the progress of his business. Ameth took his first loan with Zidisha in March 2014 and he is currently on his second loan. He lives in the Dakar neighborhood of Mermoz with his older brother Moussa, and his younger sister is currently pursuing her studies at the university.

Ameth works from home, where he raises chickens on the third floor of his house to sell. He purchases them from when they are very young and raises them until they are 45 days old. He then sells them to local clients for 2,500 XOF to 3,000 XOF ($5-$6) gaining a small profit. Since my last visit Ameth has made tremendous progress in the growth of his activities. He installed cages in one of the rooms in order to increase the number of chickens he can raise at once. Now he is able to raise up to 50 chicks in the same room he has his older chickens. He plans eventually to install an automated water tank so he won't have to fill the water twice a day.

Not only has Zidisha helped reinforce Ameth's activities, it has given him the ability to make plans on how he will continue to expand. He has already purchased several quails, from which when he plans to sell the eggs. He explained each quail will lay at least one egg daily, which he will be able to sell in order to boost his revenue. Not only the quails will boost his profit but Ameth has also recently purchased a freezer. With the freezer he will be able to store his chickens which are ready until he has clients. This will decrease the chance of losing the chickens. Another development is that Ameth has commenced to sell 50 chickens a month to a restaurant caterer. Ameth hopes to continue to expand his activities to include other local restuarants.

Even though the commencing loans have been small, this has not limited Ameth's potential to envision the future of his business. Ameth and I spent discussing what the future could hold for his activities. He spoke of land he has in Thioraye, just a little outside Dakar. He said one day his production is large enough to be able to relocate there. He also spoke of his vision to produce mayonnaise or other similar commercial products for local consumption.

Ameth not only has chickens and quails but he has two dogs as well. His two dogs he raised and trained by himself live on his rooftop terrace. They respond to his commands in Wolof. Ameth's forward-thinking and positive attitude is evident when he talks about his prospects for the future. I am glad I had a chance to stop by to visit, and I look forward to seeing his progress when I am in Dakar again!

    Sincerely,
    Paige Klunk
