I did my primary school at Swani Basic School in Choma. from grade 1 to grade 7. From there my junior secondary school, I was at Chuundu Secondary School in grade 8 and 9. In 1998, I passed my grade 10, and I was taken to St. Mark's Secondary School which is along Namwala Road. I was there from 1998 to 2000, that's when I completed my secondary school. Then from St. Mark's, I went to do my teacher education at Kitwe College of Education in Copperbelt from 2003 to 2004, and I graduated in 2005. I joined government in 2007, and I was working in Central Province at Malambanya Basic School. From there, I moved to Choma to join my wife.
For my business, I started with village chickens. After keeping the village chickens, and they did well, that's when I brought in layer chickens. So, that is how I started my own business. My wish is to expand my business to be bigger. Probably I will be able to start supplying secondary schools.
I sell village chickens when they are grown up, and then for the layers, I also sell both chickens when they are grown up and eggs. Because we are on the outskirt of the town, and people have no fridge to store fresh relish, there is demand for such kind of goods like eggs that can be stored for a longer period that are easy to prepare. It's not really difficult to manage, especially village chickens are put in a free range, so there isn't much to be done for them to keep them productive. And especially that I'm also a government worker, so there is little time now for me. So I can feed them once and go for work. Layers are also easy to keep, and they eat ordinary food.
The cost is about 200 kwacha per month. Normally I buy the village chickens at 30 kwacha and sell them at 40 kwacha. And then the layers, I sell the eggs at 1 kwacha per egg. Normally I collect 20 or 21 eggs a day, and about 10 chickens in a month. So, I get about 600 kwacha per month. I use the profit to buy small chickens for another stock.
From that money, I will buy 43 layers for 35-40 kwacha each (3.09 USD - 3.53 USD). This will help me to sustain myself and the family. I'm able to pay for my children going to school, and also for myself because I'll be going to school in April for my further studies. I expect about 22 eggs per day from 43 chickens, and I would buy 1 bag of food for 84 kwacha in a month. I would also buy medicine worth about 150 kwacha in a month. So, the profit from 43 chickens is 426 kwacha.
