Hello, my name is Dan Cembrola, one of Zidisha’s Kenya Client Relationship Managers. I am currently visiting Zidisha borrowers in Nakuru and its outskirts.

I met with Nelson immediately after exiting my matatu. This is a typical occurrence. Nelson is the proprietor of two shops located at the heavily trafficked matatu stage in Bahati. He is often the first friendly face I see when I arrive in Bahati. Upon meeting Nelson for the first time back in September, I was immediately impressed that a young man, just twenty two years old, owned and managed two businesses. He has been doing so since he was twenty.

After completing secondary school, Nelson entered the poultry business in his home village located about an hour north of Nakuru. After growing disenchanted with the future prospects of the poultry business, Nelson sold the chickens he owned for 20,000 Kenyan schillings and moved to the growing town of Bahati, a town with a vibrant economy and many opportunities for growth.

With the profits from the sale of his poultry business and a small investment from his father, Nelson opened his first stop in Bahati. He developed business contacts in Nakuru and purchased the inventory to open his general store. His first store is in actuality only a small stall. Nonetheless, Nelson utilized his sharp business mind to quickly turn a profit at his shop. With his initial profits, he rented an acre of land on which he planted maize. After employing ten people to harvest the crop, he was left with forty bags of maize. Each bag cost about 2,000 Kenyan schillings when taking into account the costs of planting seed, purchasing fertilizer, and financing the labor of harvesting the maize. Nelson was then able to resell the maize at 3,300 per bag, netting him a total profit of 52,000 schillings.

Using this money, he opened a second shop in Bahati. His second shop is more spacious and allows customers to comfortably view his growing array of offerings. Currently, Nelson employs two people to assist in managing his two shops. Though Nelson received a small loan from his father to start his first business, he now takes pride in the fact that his entrepreneurial successes have allowed him to help support his parents and siblings.
At only twenty-two years of age, Nelson is one of Zidisha's youngest borrowers. His potential appears to be without bounds. While currently managing two successful businesses and expecting an increase in profits as business picks up for the holiday season, Nelson plans to rent seven acres of land in early 2013. After making 52,000 schillings from the one acre he planted in 2012, he plans to garner at least 364,000 from the seven acres he will plant in 2013.

I look forward to viewing Nelson's progression over the coming years. With Nelson's sound business sense and motivation, I am very optimistic about his future. When we departed today he stressed that I reiterate how grateful he is to the lenders of Zidisha for helping him forward his business and career.
