About Me

I am Senegalese in nationality, I am 25 years old and live in Dakar. My name is Saer Ndaw and act as a commercial medical agent at a company called Sodomed (Société d’équipement Médicaux) and I am looking to open my own business to distribute medical products which will allow me to employ between 5 and 10 people over the next four years.

My Business

The distribution of medical products in Senegal has become a very profitable business for the people that know how to do it, have experience in the business or have professional training in the medical industry (pharmist, med student or biologist). Concerning my previous loans, I’ve borrowed 850,000CFA (roughly $1700) from my employer SODOMED which I soon repayed completely. This money allowed me to finance my professional studies in the medical industry.

Loan Proposal

We are approaching the rainy season, a time when there are often scarcities and interruptions in medical products such as syringes, perfusors, cottons and catheters, etc.; which are the very products that are needed to combat diseases like malaria which are very frequent during this period. I am a businessman without a lot of investment capital, but I go often to various vendors to purchase medical products which I sell to my clients (clinics, hospitals, health centers). This is why I am looking to you for help.

Loan Proposal

While preparing for the rainy season, malfunctions in certain medical products happen often (such as syringes, perfusors, cottons and catheters, etc…); some products that fight diseases like malaria are in high demand during this period. I am a businessman without means and will buy medical pieces and products to sell to my clients (clinics, hospitals, health centers). This is why I am looking to you for help.

    Merci!

Hello from Dakar...my name is Allen and I am currently interning at Zidisha, meeting with beneficiaries and seeing how their business progresses.
Yesterday I met with Saer and went on a run with him to deliver medical supplies. It appears he has his hands full! There are roughly 50 clinics across Dakar to which he delivers, so there is no shortage of work.
The loan Saer has with Zidishas' lenders has helped Saer begin his own medical supply business. He is slowly building this business, meeting suppliers and clients. In the near future he plans to leave his current job and work solely for himself. The Zidisha loan has helped him with the first steps of his business.
It is a booming industry because in Senegal the state hospitals are often overcrowded and underfunded. Hence the numerous private "clinics" across the city.
As you may have noticed Saer had one month's payment missing. A check he had deposited wasn't cashed by the bank. However he has made another payment and is now on track.
Attached are two photos-nurses at a clinic storeroom. And Saer in his office at Sodomed.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of visiting Saer Ndaw at his office and following him across Dakar to meet his clients. Indicative of his industrious character, Saer hosted me during his lunch break.

    Business:

Saer’s business sells basic pharmaceutical goods – bandages, syringes, anesthesia medication, cotton, medical gloves. Critically, his business also allows customers to pay for these basic goods, with a low level of added interest, a month or two after purchase. As a result, most of Saer’s customers are doctors in Dakar’s poorer districts.
On a typical day, Saer spends half his time in the office, ordering pharmaceutical products from abroad and cataloguing them in the storeroom. When not in the office, Saer zips across Dakar on his scooter to meet with clients and solicit payments. Following Saer on one of his errands, he was quick to mention that his primary motivations in pursuing this job are not monetary. Saer sees basic medical access not only as a human right, but fundamental to Senegal’s development. “Right now there’s a demand for basic pharmaceutical goods in Senegal that is simply not being met ” he told me. In fact, many Senegalese doctors are striking in protest of the government’s reluctance to fund public hospitals’ desperate acquisitions of these goods.

    Future Loans:

Saer laments that his business does not have the supplies to meet his clients’ demand for basic pharmaceutical goods. Importing his products to Dakar takes months too long. Late payments inflicted by the company’s credit policy further stall the company’s acquisition of these goods. Zidisha’s loan will help Saer’s company meet the public’s demand for basic pharmaceutical goods while preserving the company’s practice of loaning out these products to Dakar’s underprivileged hospitals. More specifically, Saer will use this loan to buy and store more pharmaceutical goods. Saer is currently trying to acquire mosquito nets in anticipation of the upcoming malarial season. He hopes to receive Zidisha’s loan in time to promote access to malarial nets in Senegal.
