I have been brought up by a single mother and gave two siblings, both younger than me. My mother is a retired primary school teacher who inspite of her meager salary managed to educate us up to college level. Things were ok till 2013 when my contract with an NGO i was working for wasn't renewed due to a shortage in funding. By then my daughter was finishing her high school & looking forward to joining university as she had performed well. My last born brother whom i had been supporting as well, was already in university. I used the savings i had to enrol my daughter in campus & have been relying on short training & counselling contracts from NGOs to get by. Being able to educate my daughter single handedly this far is my greatest achievement. I decided to start a grocery in my neighborhood when the training contracts dried up last year. The women from my community are known for their hard work & assertiveness..a fact am proud of. My daughter intends to work in conflict resolution internationally once shes done with her studies. Am an avid reader, something i like doing in my spare time.
I run a grocery store in my neighborhood of Skuta estate a few kilometres from Nyeri town on the Nyeri -Nairobi highway. Both my home & store are near St.Jude's Catholic church &.The Bridge International Academy. I also live in the same neighborhood just a few 100 metres away from my grocery store.I provide vegetables, legumes & cereals to the people that live in the area. I also sell eggs & fruits. These goods are very much in demand as they comprise everyday food ingredients for the people in this area. I chose this business because the need was there, the supply was assured as this is an agricultural production area & i would be providing a vital service. The costs incurred are mainly during sourcing of food from farmers in the region, transport costs for the same & electricity costs for the grocery store. On a good day i make 1000/-(10$) in profits daily. The profit i make goes towards paying fees & related costs for my daughter & brother
