About Me

Hi everyone. Am a Kenyan man born along the slopes of Mt. Kenya. Thats where I grew up and also where I attended school until I finished my O'level education.
Due to issues my family was going through then, I was not able to join College but got headlong into earning a living. Life was hard on my own, I worked in a succession of menial jobs but still hoped that one day I woukld be able to continue with my studies; but it wasn't to be for a long time.
In the course of my earning a living, I have movedfrom several towns in Kenya including Limuru, Nyeri, Nyahururu but I finally settled in Nakuru when I got a job with a manufacturing company.
It was exciting in the beginning and I quickly moved from a casual worker to departmental superviser within three years. But still, something was missing. I wanted to be my own boss and better still, I wanted to be in a position where I could bring positive change into the community.
Last year in September, I resigned from my job and started a stone quarrying business and in my free time started engaging in Freelance journalism as a side hustle. It was in journalism that I found my true calling; a chance to speak for the community, to drive change and best of all to engage my passion and talent. Although untrained, the writing and reporting came naturally and this is when I decided to close down the stone quarrying business and engage in citizen journalism fulltime.
I have a wife who is a dressmaker and two kids. My daughter is in primary school and my son will join nursery school next year.

My Business

I earn my living through online journalism and youth mentorship.
When I applied for my first Zidisha loan, journalism was just a side husle but has since become my main source of income. In addition, through invitations by several community leaders to address the youth on Zidisha I have evolved into a youth mentor, motivational speaker and a resource person on working online.
This new world is exciting not only for the earnings, but also for the chance to impact positively on the lives of my community.
My journalism work earns me an average of $25 to $30 per week and my speaking engagements bring in about $15 per session. Usually I have 1-2 engagements per month.
My work expenses vary since I travel to different parts daily. Its the tavelling expenses that usually consist the bulk of my work expenses as I move roung covering events. In a typical week I can spend up to $10.
I save 10% of my profits and the rest goes into taking care of the family needs and paying fees for my daughter.
I spend my earnings on school fees for my daughter, food, rent, clothing and other basic necessities.

Loan Proposal

With the funds from this loan, I intend to buy a bicycle that I will use to travel in my news gathering.
I have been spending a lot of money on transport as I go News gathering and by using a bicycle I will be able to save up to $3-$4 per day.
The money thus saved will go into boosting our family savings and by and by, our standards of living will greatly improve.

Well dear lenders, I have finally repaid my loan in full and its quite a feeling! The first loan you gave me has really positively changed my life, my family's and that of my community. As a citizen journalist, i have become the voice of my community and in some ways, I have helped bring positive change.
on a personal level, my standing in the community has really gone up. It started with invitations to speak to organised youth and women groups about Zidisha. By and by, through my work online, I have been invited to mentor youth on working online, raising funds online and marketing their services online.
As i had earlier shared with you, I have also been taking a course in photojournalism and these skills will now take me to the next level.
A whole new world has opened up to me or due to Zidisha!

This photo shows some of the youth after a training on Zidisha and how they can market their products online. They are seen here making shaggy mats.

The phone I bought has been a great help as I cover what is taking place in my community.
In this photo I was highlighting the health risks that accompany drought and lack of clean and safe drinking water

    Hi,
Am so sorry that I have not made any payments lately and I have also not posted here.
i lost my phine together with the SIM card that I am supposed to use in making payments. I would have had it replaced by now but I also lost my ID which is required for SIM replacement.
By 12th this month, I expect to have received my new ID so I will get my line replaced and I can resume payments.
Am doing ok in my work and Journalism studies and I hope to serve the community in an even larger way through journalism.
Have a good time and Hopefully, I will resume payments as soon as I receive my new id.
    Thankyou in advance.

I lost my phone together with the line I use to make payments over a month ago. Normally, it takes just a few moments to have the SIM card replaced if you have prove of ownership.
Unfortunately, I also lost my identification documents but I have already applied for others. I expect to receive them within the next one to two weeks. Immediately, I doreceive these, I will resume payments before the 15th of March. I have already bought a new phone and this is why I wish to reduce my instalments just a little.
However, I hope to raise the amount so that I can finish payments within six weeks.
    Thankyou.

      Hello Hope2012,
I am sorry that it has taken me almost a month to reply to your query about Ecrah.
Ecrah has proved very difficult to contact since her phone is never answered and those other contacts that are available are not willing to talk about her.
She is no longer my mentee and it also seems that she has changed her residence.
Lets hope her new VM will have better results with her.

Hello to all. Following some financial realignments that I am going through, I wish to reduce my current weekly repayment installment from the current Kshs. 569 to a figure I will be more comfortable with.
This January, my daughter will be joining a higher class and this requires me to buy her a new uniform and stationary. After the December festive season, I am a bit constrained financially and since I don't wish to miss any more of my repayments, I would feel more at ease reducing the amount.
This is just a temporary issue and by February if all goes well, i will raise my installment again.
I am really apologetic to all my lenders and I hope you will understand and kindly bear with me.

Hi, its my sincere hope that all of you had an exciting festive season. I also had a good time with my family and we had a very happy time together.
To all my lenders, am sorry I failed on my payment on Sunday. I will do it this Saturday and will soon get back on track. Am really sorry for any inconveniences but rest assured all the monies will be repaid in full.

Happy blessed and prosperous 2015 to all of you!
