About Me

My name is Judith Makau, last born in a family of six members. I was born in Makueni county - eastern part of Kenya. This is a semi-arid area where people do farming but on a very small scale as well as keeping cattle. I grew up helping my parents in the farm as well as looking after the animals.

I later went to school and later relocated to Mombasa in search of greener pastures. It is here where I did a course in journalism and mass communication. I was later employed in a church in Mombasa city as a video editor. I worked there for 3 years and then quit to start my own business.

I love listening to gospel music whenever time allows.

My Business

I buy and sell fabric mostly the ones used to make African clothes. They are popularly known as Mandelas. I buy them from wholesalers and then sell them to my clients who are spread throughout the country. I mostly rely on social media such as Facebook and Whatsup for marketing and this has proved to be very effective.

I sell about 100 pieces per month and this fetches a net of $250. My overheads are mostly transport costs and phone and data charges. The other challenge is price fluctuations depending on demand and supply of this item.

Loan Proposal

With this money I will buy a dozen pieces of fabric which I then sell to my clients. My profit margin is about 50% and I expect to sell them within a short time. I will use the profit to repay the loan while at the same time buy more stock.

I am very optimistic that this marks a beginning of bigger things to come. I want to make good use of Zidisha loans to grow my business.

Thank you.
