My name is Judith Makau, last born in a family of six members. I was born in Makueni county - eastern part of Kenya. This is a semi-arid area where people do farming but on a very small scale as well as keeping cattle. I grew up helping my parents in the farm as well as looking after the animals.
I later went to school and later relocated to Mombasa in search of greener pastures. It is here where I did a course in journalism and mass communication. I was later employed in a church in Mombasa city as a video editor. I worked there for 3 years and then quit to start my own business.
I love listening to gospel music whenever time allows.
I buy and sell fabric mostly the ones used to make African clothes. They are popularly known as Mandelas. I buy them from wholesalers and then sell them to my clients who are spread throughout the country. I mostly rely on social media such as Facebook and Whatsup for marketing and this has proved to be very effective.
I sell about 100 pieces per month and this fetches a net of $250. My overheads are mostly transport costs and phone and data charges. The other challenge is price fluctuations depending on demand and supply of this item.
Like my previous loan, I will use the money to buy more fabric which I will then sell to my ready clients. The business is profitable and I hope to make some money out of this business.
My aim is to grow with Zidisha progressively and be able to buy larger stocks in future thus making more sales and profit.
