I am 36 yrs old tech enthusiast, married with two kids. I have a degree in Information Technology and work full time in a computer shop in the bustling city of Nairobi in central Kenya. As you can imagine there are very few green spaces. I am have passion for nature and animals. I try to spend as much time as I can in the country and generally appreciate a farming lifestyle and value of hard work with one's own hands.
In my spare time, I try to do a little farming here and there. I also have ambitions for livestock rearing. For this year I have ambitions to rear traditional chicken which are hardy and resistance to disease. I have recently acquired a small piece of land in the outskirts of Nairobi for this project. I have ambitions to develop it for a chicken rearing project - put up a structure and sink a well for water. Since my project location is quite close to the city, market should not be problem once i go live.
In order to improve my flock of birds, i intend to purchase month old chicks of an improved breed know locally as "Kuroiler"; these breed are good egg producers and can also be reared for meat. I intend to cross breed these with my existing flock once mature to increase the quality of the birds. This should also ensure higher yield: more eggs and higher maturity weight. Currently, i use the eggs for my consumption at home. Hopefully, with more eggs, i can start selling some to the neighbors. Each month-old chick is sold at about 2 dollars. With this loan, i should be able to purchase about forty chicks as well as special feed and vaccines to sustain them for the initial months.
