About Me

I am a social and kind individual from a small town, Mazeras, in Kilifi County, Kenya. My typical day is a 12-hour work period and a 3-hour bonding with people I know in my area. I find interactions with people very enriching. I get to learn better ways of doing things. I simply love company though I come from a family of four. My deepest interest is solving problems; no wonder I am in this kind of business. Some problems take so little effort to solve that no one need be troubled when I am available.

My Business

After college in 2010, I had a hard time finding gainful employment. Being a passionate entrepreneur, I immediately realized a technological gap in my area. I started a one-computer cybercafe where I assist people in accessing email, downloadable forms and social networks like Twitter at a reasonable fee. I also got tasked to create new Facebook, Twitter and email accounts. Occasionally, I get to troubleshoot faulty computers and replace parts for clients, Additionally, I sell a few mobile accessories. I cannot complain about my business because I use the profits for meeting my bills and support my mother alongside.

Loan Proposal

I have carried on an M-Pesa sub-agency for about a year now, and I have a better understanding on how commissions are earned. A sub-agent may work super hard at her business but is always disappointed by her monthly commissions earned. Most of the time the super-agent has set the commission sharing ratio in such a skewed way to favour him against the sub-agent (sometimes super-agent:sub-agent=60:40). Safaricom recommends 20:80 because the sub-agent puts own funds and time into the business with likely losses to fraud from occasional con men.

Subsequently, I have chosen to go the super-agent way by applying for my M-Pesa tills directly from Safaricom. However, this has its own huge initial costs attached. One has to register a limited company (which averages at KES 35,000). One also has to provide at least KES 100,000 in float amount for each M-Pesa till to be booked at application stage. Notwithstanding, I plan to raise this loan and source the remaining amount from savings, personal sources and apply for at least 3 tills at Safaricom. This move will ensure I earn reasonably high commissions and improve my life.

    Thanks.

I had challenges with repayments but didn't wish to reschedule. However, now I feel it is prudent to reschedule this loan to a reasonable amount so that I continue to repay as expected. Thanks.

    Hello Shehi,
Thank you for the explanation on your repayments and I wish you well.
Do you have any news of Mary Nyagol? She has not made any repayments on her loan.

      Hi Andyfletcher,
I have been in touch with Mary Nyagol (actually, we meet in person because she lives near my shop) and posted on her loan page. However, my post is awaiting Zidisha approval.

      Thanks.

    Hi Friends,
Since I started benefitting from these affordable loans my life has improved GREATLY. Before, I had been struggling in business with lack of essential equipment and steady electricity.
Earlier last year, I afforded my own electricity connection and I purchased a collection of phone repair tools that make an impressive daily earning on this side of the Sahara. Then mid 2014, I got into M-Pesa subagency that I run till today and enjoying monthly commissions.

Come 2015 and I got a big leap into life. I purchased a piece of land and got a comfortable home for my family bit.ly/1YqvYWQ . And it has been GOOD. We're enjoying living in that house EVERY minute. If I was to do it again, I wouldn't have it any other way :-)

However, the current repayments that I make on my parralel loans are almost suffocating. Therefore, I wish to let you know that I will be taking a fresh approach towards my debts. I will need to restructure them in a way that I don't hurt my business that I depend on for a living and prevent possible default. From now on, I cannot promise steady repayments. The easy thing would be to reschedule to an 6-year loan term of $3/week ( and game the repayment rate) but that wouldn't help anyone :-( I might take sometime to stabilize but it is the best thing to do. Else, my business will fail and I will have to inevitably default.

Any word of encouragement or questions should be directed to my personal contact [email protected] . Thank you for your understanding on this.

    Yours truly, Shehi.

    Hi lenders,

I've been busy setting up our FIRST family house.

    Thanks.

      Hi Samuel,
Good to hear that all is well, and congratulations on the news of your first home.
I wish you all the best.
All is fine here in Australia - in fact a little too "fine" with bush fires wreaking havoc in many parts - and officially summer hasn't even started yet!
      Regards
      Michael

        Hi Franmiguel,
Thank you for confirming that you're well in Australia. Sorry for the bush fires. They're so characteristic of your continent :-(
Yes, I am glad we got a house now. I got another loan from a new lending platform and built the right side1-bedroomed house for my mum. Then an amazing friend (ex-Zidisha lender) donated to me the 2 sets on the left for myself and my brother (see photo).

It has been wonderful in Mazeras. Two weeks of raining but very high temperatures of 20-30 degree Celcius. No Cholera or Typhoid disease breakouts though. Business is also booming as many people are coming back to rural homes for X-Mass holidays.
We also had the Pope visiting our country.

        Regards,
        Shehi.

    Dear Lenders,

Samuel kindly contacted us over the weekend to let us know he thought some of his payments had been duplicated in his account. Checking over our records, it seems he was correct! Upon removing these payments, you may notice your lending account balance decrease accordingly. I so apologize for this error, and give a huge thanks to Samuel for helping us catch it.

    Best,
    Bayle, Country Liaison Manager

      You're welcome, Michael.
I will try with the service provider again some months later. Since I have spent better part of the loan on purchase of land, I have to work extra hard on my business to raise the deficit in few months.
      Wish me luck, friend. Thanks.
      Shehi.

    Hi lenders,
Sadly, my M-Pesa superagency endeavour has been frustrated. The service provider insists that my company has to be 6 months old for it to get the nod for setting up shop.
I have now invested part of the loan in the acquisition of a piece of land and the rest of loan I have put into my M-Pesa sub-agency float .
This was the best way to preserve the value of the loan amount.
Either way I will keep repaying from my business profits. I don't plan to reschedule my repayments any time soon.

    Thanks.

      Hi Michael,
How is life in Perth? I suspect we share the same hot weather because I live near Mombasa beaches myself. Also, how do college graduates without formal employment, engage themselves economically in Australia? I understand there is no neighbouring country that they can go to in search of jobs.

      Thanks.

      • Franmiguel    Jul 14, 2015

        Hi Samuel,
Thanks again for following up on a few of your mentees on my behalf.
Perth does have a hot climate, however at this time of year it is cool, although never really cold, as it is winter.
I have heard about the beaches in Kenya, we also have fantastic beaches, but it will be a couple of months before I go back to the beach for a swim.
Here in Australia, we are very lucky. We have a social welfare system that enables those less fortunate to access some money for food and housing if they are sick or unable to find work. The unemployment rate is slowly rising at the moment, indicating that our economy is weakening, although the official unemployment figures, currently 6%, suggest far less people out of work than is actually the case.
Many people in Australia would talk about how hard it is to get by, with increasing electricity costs or rising food costs, but in truth, we have it very easy here and most people do not appreciate how tough it is elsewhere, and just because they cannot afford to buy the new iPhone and go on an overseas holiday, that is not the definition of a tough life!
Thanks again for being a link between borrowers and lenders.
        Regards
        Michael

You're welcome. The world is showing their support to Kenya and I am appreciating.

At least in your hemisphere you have seasons. In Kenya, I can hardly tell winter from autumn. The changes are small.
Welfare in Kenya isn't the best. Unemployed people do not access any funds for basics. However, the entrepreneurial spirit is keeping many people with just enough money to live by. No holidays or expensive gadgets. Maybe once we have fixed our politics then the cake will become big enough for everyone.

I can't blame the Australians. Everyone wants to live like Kardashians -care free. ;-)

          Thanks, Shehi.

Sorry for seeing your request late, Andy .
Violet had believed that she was done repaying her loan. However, after making a call to her, I made her know of the outstanding balance. Then she promised to clear her loan when she back to profit making.

Thank you for reminding me, Andy!
