About Me

I am a 32 year old Kenyan citizen who graduated from Technical University of Kenya with Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Electrical and Electronics Second Class Honors (Upper Division).
I am currently an Automation Engineer alongside a farmer, CEO at the Kamandes Farm in Makuyu, Central Kenya

My Business

I deal with mainly farming apart from the other part time job as an event organizer.
Kenya has about 40 million people. Agriculture contributes over 25 percent of the GDP. Close to 80 percent of the population live in the rural areas and derive much of their livelihood from land i.e. crops and livestock. Sixteen percent of the country is High and Medium Potential Land (HMPL) while the remaining 84 percent, supporting about 25 percent of the human population, is classified as Arid and Semi-Arid Land (ASAL) areas where livestock is almost the sole source of livelihood for the communities living in the area. Livestock contributes about 50 percent of Agricultural GDP and over 10 percent of the national GDP. Dairy production, the largest contributor to the livestock GDP, accounts for an estimated 33 percent of the agricultural GDP (Staal et al., 2003).
Farming as a business is a relatively new concept for small-scale farmers who have traditionally farmed as a way of life to provide for their subsistence needs. Commercial farming was previously associated with industrial crops and large-scale farms.
The Kamandes Farm involves a deliberate choice of farm enterprises with an aim of maximizing on the benefits that farmers gain from their activities. It involves a change in the way smallholder farming is perceived. This is because farming is a profitable venture which provides gainful employment and a source of livelihood for many people.
Having started its operations in 2000 by my parents, it didn’t produce much then as little capital was invested in it due to the fact that they were working and living in Thika. In 2002, My Mother left Thika to go to Makuyu and concentrate on the farm and was later followed by my Father in 2008. I was left in Thika while working in various companies as depicted in my curriculum vitae before joining the Kenya Polytechnic University College in 2010. I have attached my calling letter to the institution.
In 2011, I took control of operations in the farm. I have managed to make a variety of achievements among them being purchasing a Friesian calf, registering the farm at Sheria House, enlightening my parents on good farming practices that I have managed to learn from school and through various projects like Agricultural shows, extension officers, field days, radio programmes, magazines, internet, brochures and booklets. So far, I have managed to achieve these, high academic honors while still ensuring operations ran smoothly in the farm and I believe with Zidisha's Assistance, more will be felt largely.
The Expansion and Improvement project of the Kamandes Farm with additional poultry houses will have a significant impact on the livelihood of many people and the country at large in its Gross Domestic Product. The loan will give me room to create more employment opportunities for the less fortunate around my home area, minimizing idleness and crime. We will also be in a position to fully utilize the available resources, start an awareness programme to my fellow students in school and also to the world at large by setting up a website that will seek the youth to practice farming as either a career or part time occupation that will make them not sorely rely on getting jobs in the corporate world which is increasingly becoming difficult.

Loan Proposal

Dear Lenders,
The loan granted by you will be in the following criteria:
Ksh. 25,000 which is ($271.997) to purchase electrical components for me to make a water pump power panel, hence enabling me be able to save Ksh. 40,000 ( $435.195) more as purchasing the panel for the pump is Ksh. 65,000 ($707.191) or more. I will use my acquired skills from school and put it into practise. I already have the electrical diagram, and the panel will take me only a single day to assemble after which the water pump will be working well. The pump will boost water supplies in the farm and more so for the banana suckers I plan to plant.
Ksh. 32,000 ($348.156) will be used to purchase banana suckers. I am diversifying more to banana farming since it has proved to be also a lucrative business which has ready market that is actually 10% satisfied, leaving the rest 90% open.
Ksh. 30,000 (326.599) will be used to purchase Twelve 90kg bags of dairy meal. These are the feed for the cows and they work well boosting milk levels, hence more production.
Ksh. 15,000 ($163.300) will be used to purchase watermelon seeds, since I have a new piece of land where I have decided to plant them. They fetch a very good market here, hence a good business.
Kindly fund my loan.
Thanks

    Dear Lenders,

As part of the growing economy, Kenya has diversified into various agri-cultural money making businesses. I got a supply tender for eggs and chicken with one of the leading fast foods company in Kenya and entire East Africa. The demand has rissen and I need to add more poultry to produce more, hence a bigger profit margin. This loan will enable me multiply my sales double. Kindly accept my request and its a guarantee that in 2 months, every week I will be sending my repayment for the same.

    Dear Lenders,
I have opted to reduce my repayments temporarily for a month. This month in the country we were hit by a warm period that affected the farm produce and overall milk production by my cattle as I depend on the nappier grass. The phenomena that we experienced is known as equinox.
Kindly bear with m as I look forward to resuming normal repayment installments.

    Dear Lenders,
I trust you are fine enjoying your holiday with friends and family.
I am particularly grateful that thanks to being part of Zidisha volunteer mentors, I managed to secure a partial scholarship from University of South Wales in United Kingdom to pursue Master in Business Administration. For one to get the scholarship, you must demonstrate any volunteer experience that has played a significant role in making the world a better place by touching lives, which Zidisha does.
I am more than grateful for the continued support you have offered to me.
Thank you Zidisha fraternity. I will forever be indebted to you.

    Dear lenders,
The rainy season has started to subside here in Kenya after having heavy downpours for the past 1 - 2 months.
We are now geared for summer starting in January even though probably the rains might extend to mid January 2016.
I have been working tirelessly weeding for the past few days to ensure that the crops grow without any interference. It's a rather expensive affair especially when the farm is mostly wet but I'm glad so far it's over.
Thank you for your continued support.

    Dear Lenders,
I trust you are all doing fine.
I have been on a journey while on my day job and got to visit Uganda. The country is very green and fertile especially Western Uganda where they have a lot of banana plantations among many other plantations.
I particularly got to interact with banana plantations owners and some dairy farmers whereby we had a discussion about their success in their business. They emphasized to me about commitment into what I choose to grow or rear. Also, the need to modernize the farming no matter how small the piece of land might be.
Luckily we now have access to internet, hence all the tips for virtually any type of farming can be found.
It was interesting and a challenge as well to see old men and women having embraced technology. I felt empowered and I hope that in as much we as young generation don't consider much farming as a career, the success I saw the men and women in agribusiness having is quite commendable.
The trip was definitely a mind changer.
A change is as good as a rest.

    Dear Lenders,
I am now back in Kenya and will send in more funds tomorrow.
I look forward to making my repayment as early as 2 months in advance. This is because, courtesy of Zidisha, I was able to clear the university and secured a good job immediately.
I thank God for the time we have shared together and look forward for more success through this platform.
I was in Congo for 7 weeks to familiarise and training more on our machines.
Thank you for you continued support.
    I really do appreciate.

      Hi Paul,
I'll be glad to help. You don't have to damage your repayment record for being away. If in any case you need someone in Kenya to do a repayment for you, I'm willing to assist. You could send me a bank transfer/WU or Moneygram and I shall convert it into M-Pesa and pay it in for you.
We will liaise with Bayle to have it credited to your account either way.
      Thanks.

    Dear Lenders,
I am currently in Congo for work. I am in liaison with Zidisha staff so that we can know how I can send my repayment to them because here in Congo, Safaricom network is not available for me. However I am doing what I can and in due time, you will get my repayments sent.
    Kind regards,
    Paul
