About Me

Hello,
I am Sam, a student as well a farmer. I am in the fourth year of my economics course, yet I ended up developing an interest in a field entirely unrelated to my course. This is farming particularly horticultural farming. I grow tomatoes in a green house. I developed this interest barely three years ago, started the greenhouse just to try it out and it became an instant success and I ended up becoming a part time student and a full time farmer. I make enough to pay for my education to maintain the greenhouse. I need the capital to increase the size and capacity of my greenhouse in order to improve profits and to take advantage of economies of scale.

My Business

My investment which is a greenhouse where I grow tomatoes measures 15 feet wide which is the standard, but from my research I have determined that I can almost double the amount of produce just by increasing the size of the greenhouse to 25 feet wide. There i a ready market for tomatoes in my region with the majority of my clientele coming from the numerous hotels and educational institutions in the region. Sales are very healthy with only a few people growing tomatoes in a greenhouse within the area. Most farmers prefer growing their tomatoes in an open farm which gives me a competitive edge since there i a big difference in the quality I produce and theirs. The only risk my business faces is the high operational cost which can only be countered by an increase in productivity which is easily achievable from your assistance. I make about Khs.150,000/ on average in a month with the costs totaling 100,000/ leaving me with 50,000/ profit. I want to double sales to Kshs.300,000 and to cut cost to around Kshs.150,000 which is possible only through expansion.

Thank you.

Loan Proposal

Hello Zidisha members,
True to my word, I am back for my second loan. The first loan went a great way in improving my horticultural venture. I have increased the size of my greenhouse, and I have plans to further diversify my farming, but those plans are for another period. This loan is meant to fund the building of a new water tank. With the increased size, comes more sales, but also more requirements and my current tank is running short. We usually have a dry season from January up to around April, and the loan should enable me to build a bigger water tank by the end of the month. This will keep my farm running at 100% until the rains come back. I will most certainly pay back in a shorter time period.

Thank you for your interest. Regards.

    Hello,
Let me apologize for the delay in payments. I didn't know about the policy change with regards to rescheduling payments, And I was unable to pay the previous months loan. I haven't received payments from the creditors who I supplied to over the past few months. Nonetheless, I am expecting them to pay within a few weeks. I will readjust my schedule once conditions are more favorable. This should be within two months.

    Hello Everyone,
Hope you are all doing great. This is just a quick update.
My business is going along fine. I installed a new tank a few weeks ago using the second loan. Surprisingly, we have had heavy rainfall for the past week - which is odd considering we were not expecting rainfall until April - and as a farmer I couldn't be happier. My new tank was full and overflowing in no time.

I now have enough water to keep my farm running for a few more weeks. I have been able to make repayments promptly and in monthly installments. I will keep you updated.

    Thank you for your contribution.

    Warmest regards,
    Sam - the farmer :)

    Mr. Keino,

Hope all is well with you and your business. Thank you for all the prompt payments.

I see that you invited Roselyne Wekullo to join Zidisha. How long have you known her? Her business seems interesting, but I'd like to get more info befor I decide to lend to her.

    Thanks,
    Cris

    Hello Crissr,
Thank you for the compliment; the business is doing great, in fact its doing far much better than I expected.
Roselyne is a really close friend, I can vouch for her and the viability of her business; that is probably why she is the only person I have invited to Zidisha.
You can always ask me for further clarifications about her.

    Regards,
    Sam

Thank you everyone who funded my first loan. I took advantage of the holiday season, and I made fantastic sales. I have been able to repay the rest of my loan, but the job does not stop there. I am finalizing the plans for my next project, and I will definitely be back.

    Regards.

I have hit a slight snag in the building of the greenhouse although I will complete it by the end of the month. I have already planted an additional 150 seedlings, but I am yet to complete the construction of the greenhouse in itself which is taking up most of my earnings at the moment.

I offer my sincerest apologies for the delay.
